I help fill the gap in quality structured literacy professional development and instructional coaching for K-3rd Primary Educators
Hey Elementary Principals! As a principal, you’re responsible for supporting your primary teachers in delivering small group instruction that truly impacts your youngest students success. But without the right tools, it’s tough to know if small groups are moving the needle—and your teachers shouldn’t be relying on trial and error with their small group instruction. That’s why I created a FREE Early Literacy Small Group Observation Sheet to help you: -Identify what’s working (and what’s not) in small groups -Give targeted, meaningful feedback to teachers -Use real data to drive early literacy improvements Take the guesswork out of small group observations and ensure your students get the best support possible. Reading is the epicenter of equity. Yet, many students leave elementary school struggling to read. We often think, it’s just a comprehension problem. Here's the rub: All reading problems after elementary grades shows up as a comprehension problem. So more comprehension strategies aren’t going to help. We need to help young people rebuild their literacy foundation as part of a liberatory education. If you’re a middle school teacher, how do you get to the root of the problem? How do you close those gaps without slowing down your current curriculum? That’s what we will take up in my upcoming 3-part masterclass series, Achieving Equitable Literacy Grades 5-9. I just finished reading an eye-opening publication about the pivotal role of reading in learning success. It's crazy how crucial it is for learners to grasp reading and comprehension early on – without that foundation, mastering content becomes an uphill battle. It got me thinking about my teaching practice a few years ago and how that experience revealed the unfair advantage some students have in South Africa, of being able to learn every subject in their home language and even write their matric exams in their home language while others miss out on that privilege. I loved how this publication emphasised translanguaging and embracing multiple languages in the classroom to empower learners. And speaking of solutions, let me share what I'm up to. I'm all about tackling the literacy gap head-on, starting with early learning. Pre-literacy and storytelling are where it's at for us an organisation. We support early learning practitioners to use stories daily to create a love for reading and to use stories to develop children holistically. Thanks to our partnership with the Great African Read, every year we set up reading rooms in schools, filling them with books in English and the school’s home language. We create spaces that make children want to engage with books and create a love for reading. Let's keep the conversation going about how we can make reading accessible to every child out there. #EducationForAll #LiteracyMatters 📚#earlylearning #readingmatters #zerodropoutcampaign #literacyforall
