The USDA is planning to launch a California Smoke-Taint endorsement for 2025 grape crop insurance policies. Payouts will be triggered based on countywide "eligible smoke days". No lab tests required. No proof of loss required. As it stands, nearly all winery policies have excluded smoke taint due to over $600M of smoke-related losses in 2020.
