I love this story. Thanks for sharing. Companies want hard skills, soft skills, social skills, and so on, and on. In a market where accounting professionals have shrunken in the last 5 years these "leaders" act like they can go in the front or the back of the building and find senior accountants just hanging out waiting for an opportunity. LOL! Stop blaming headhunters and recruiters for your inability to evaluate and hire a senior accountant that didn't have the professional etiquettes. A lot of managers get promoted for their ability to get the job done until they have to hire and build a team and they find out that soft skills matter just as much if not more than the hard skills. I think these managers really think that senior accountants grow on a tree and all recruiters do is just go get another one from a different tree every time a senior accountant from one tree doesn't work out. LOL! It's 2024 and the accounting professionals today are a lot different than the 80s, 90s, and so forth.

I had a potential new client call last week with a Controller looking to hire a Senior Accountant full-time. She explained that the position was a backfill and that she had to let go of the Senior Accountant she had on the team for the past six months because the person had made a fool of themselves at a very important company event. I didn't ask for details, but she shared that the incident was so bad that this person was fired immediately the morning after the event. 😮 😮 😮 When I asked her how many recruiting firms were already on the search, she told me that I would be the FOURTH firm added. I politely asked her why she needed four recruiting firms for a single search, and she replied... "I don't think the first recruiting firm I used for the Senior Accountant we just let go did a good enough job screening the candidate before we hired them. I want to have more agencies on it to help weed out "bad" candidates." 🤔 🤔 🤔 🤔 The Senior Accountant was on the team for six months before they acted a fool and got canned. There is nothing about how a recruiter SCREENS candidates that would predict future "crazy" behavior. NOTHING. What I told her was this... 1️⃣ A resume can look spot on. 2️⃣ The candidate may do exceptionally well selling themselves in an interview. 3️⃣ Professional references can be superior. But people are still people. And people are unpredictable. If a hire you found from a headhunter doesn't work out months down the road, that has nothing to do with the headhunter. It has nothing to do with our vetting process, which later includes our clients when they conduct multiple round interviews with the candidates we submit. If you're working with a recruiting firm, pay attention to their guarantee period and monitor the hire. If you start seeing signs that the person isn't going to work out, let the recruiter know during that grace period. That guarantee is there to protect both parties. “When you get into a contract role look around the room, if you see permanent staff that are complacent then pick up where their shortcomings are” 🤔 A different take that came from a lunch last week with a Finance Executive who had started their current employment in a contract. What started as a three month “give it a go” project, resulted in two new internal moves & a permanent offer across eighteen months. I often see finance executives nervous to take a contract assignment - citing instability & hindering your ability to interview for permanent roles etc. But try shifting your mindset on contracting, as in this instance, it may result in the win you're looking for. #contracting #jobsearch #finance

''You get what you pay for'' I got approached by a client via a referral who was struggling to get any Cv's for vacancy which seemed on the face of it to be straightforward. There were no obvious red flags Hours and salary was good The duties were fairly standard Apart from no hybrid working (which is not uncommon) there was nothing stopping them attracting people. So why are they struggling??? The issue was clear when he explained the agency he was using and at what price... He was very proud to have negotiated a sole agency agreement with a small generalist who rarely recruits accountancy staff with the rate of 8% +vat 🤦🏻♂️ ''Therein lies the problem'' We are passionate about what service we offer our clients and having done this for almost 20 years I know we probably undercharge compared to the fees charged by competitors which makes me wince. We charge a fee that we stand by and reflects the work and service levels we provide. We are not the cheapest but definitely not the most expensive. Of course Im happy to negotiate, but only as long as its mutually beneficial. And it will never be at risk of lowering the quality of our service at that point it is not conducive to a long term relationship and we have and will walk away.
