DISRUPTION: Students crave meaning and purpose now more than ever. I left a seasoned teaching career to provide experiential learning initiatives that curate environments for young people to learn resilience, grit, and teamwork by embarking on transformative adventures. I took a gigantic leap of faith to build a community, Mountain Goat Movement, without any funding because I firmly believe that young people deserve much more than what we are currently offering them in schools. Talking about improving mental health, resiliency, and community among our young people are just words -- this doesn't mean anything unless we are actually doing the boots on the ground work that will allow for our communities and schools to thrive. In 2023, I served over 2,000 families as a one-man team. I personally raised over $100,000 to fund low-income students on transformative trips from the Adirondacks to Antarctica. I launched over 15 events that served 3,200 people without a budget. Help me help the next generation. Vince Coleman grew up in a rough neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio. Although church was never a big part of his life, he recalls one ministry that reached out to him. A suburban church would send a bus on Sunday mornings to take kids to their services. Vince misbehaved and wasn’t invited back, but one thing stuck: he heard John 3:16 for the first time, which planted a seed. Vince graduated from Columbus City Schools, served in the military, and eventually came to faith. He began a career in education, working as a middle school principal. But as he grew in his faith, he realized the real challenges kids faced weren’t in school but at home. Vince left education to work at a nonprofit helping families, but he still felt something was missing. The root of the problem, he realized, was deeper—it was a matter of the heart. That’s when Vince discovered LifeWise Academy, which offers public school students the opportunity to attend Bible classes during the school day. Vince’s entire life seemed to have been leading to that moment. Under Vince’s leadership, LifeWise began serving more than 20 schools in Central Ohio. Instead of busing kids out of the community on Sundays, Vince works with LifeWise to bring the Bible directly to public school students during their school day. Introducing students to exciting, real-world applications in science, technology, engineering and math is crucial if the U.S. is to remain competitive in the world economy. PDCA member ECS Limited recently collaborated with Cognia, a global non-profit organization focused on improving educational opportunities for all learners. Through Cognia, ECS staff helps educators at Briar Woods High School in Ashburn, Va. Alexis Herr, P.E. (pictured), a vice president and principal engineer at ECS, was one of the participants who offered to help Briar Woods teachers integrate more STEM concepts into their classes. "Using my own experience, I thought, 'Wouldn't it be great to have more exposure to kids in high school, middle school or early childhood?" said Leo Titus Jr., P.E., COO at ECS. "This was a way to get real life challenges into schools."
