Last week, Lee & Associates NYC volunteers participated in a horticulture maintenance project around Hudson River Park’s Pier 63. Volunteers engaged in team-building activities while learning about Hudson River Park’s unique urban ecology. No Mow May A great way of encouraging wildlife in your gardens, is NOT to mow your lawn. Yup do nothing…how great is that! Many of us attempt to keep our lawns like the 9th fairway and fail, so why not relax a bit and accept the daisies and clover as they are great for the pollinating species needing nectar. I’m not saying go crazy and accept dandelions there are limits! 97% of flower meadows have been lost since the 1930s, so is there any surprise that pollinators, so vital for our ecology including food production are in decline?! Research indicates that by just not mowing for a month you can increase the amount of nectar available tenfold!! 🙂🐦 Very happy to share our new article in Journal of Applied Ecology: "Remote sensing reveals scale-specific effects of forage crop mowing and landscape structure on a declining farmland bird"! https://lnkd.in/d7nHzgib 🌱 The journey of this research is quite a story. After developing an algorithm for detecting grassland mowing using Sentinel-2 images (published here: https://lnkd.in/dJU7BSQC), I reached out to ornithologists about the potential of satellite monitoring for bird ecology. 🤝 This led to an exciting collaboration with Giacomo Assandri (now tenure track professor at Università degli Studi del Piemonte Orientale), who proposed studying the impact of first mowing dates on Alauda arvensis (skylark) populations in Po Valley forage crops. 📚 Three years of work later, our research is complete, thanks to exceptional coauthors and the valuable feedback from very careful JAE reviewers. 🔍 Key findings: Our research revealed that at the landscape scale, mowing timing remained consistent across years. Early-mown areas showed lower skylark populations, likely because these patches offer limited or no productivity over time, affecting local population sizes. 🌍 Implications: We provide a new perspective on the overarching influence of spatial scale in driving the abundance of a declining farmland bird species, supporting the urgency of designing landscape scale-effective AESs. 🚀 Looking forward: Implementation through farmer collectives, supported by cutting-edge remote sensing monitoring, could be key to effective conservation strategies.

Our second tour of Ministers of Imagination turns to Urban Ecology In our march through the Imagination of guests to the UK podcast ‘From What If to What Next’, we arrive at ‘U’, a letter represented solely by the topic Urban Ecology. Here the Ministers seize on our innate relationship with the botanical kingdom, give advice on how we control weeds, and advocate for green and blue spaces in our lives. Urban Ecology A botanist on every local council: They would understand wild plants and be responsible for council policy on matters of management of their green areas, including road verges, leading to a complete shift in understanding of things like mowing and applying weedkillers. Jane Perrone Encourage and promote the cultural relationship with plants: I would like to see a lot more art using plants and focusing on plants. If we could celebrate those plants in a different way, then we could inspire people across the board. Some are interested in the words, some in the visual aspect, and some are interested in their properties. All it will take is a little sparkle to change our relationship with plants. Sophie Leguil Financially resource rooftop farming projects: Rooftop farming projects will be rewarded for all the environmental benefits they give to the city. They will receive a fund, as a result of which there will be many more people that are going to have other rooftop farming projects. Paola Krug Make weed training a prerequisite of buying pesticides: Anybody who wanted to purchase a synthetic weedkiller would have to go on some kind of training course before they used it. They’d learn the value of weeds and understand how to read a label to apply the product properly and dispose of it properly. In those aisles you’d have to have a member of staff on standby to rush over and quiz the person attempting to make a purchase. Great Lakes Research Center (GLRC) is proud to announce a new publication co-authored by our member, Dr. Rodney Chimner, in the journal Wetlands Ecology and Management. Title: "Characterizing northern white-cedar communities in harvested and unharvested lowland forests of Michigan, USA" This research provides valuable insights into the complexity of lowland northern white-cedar forest communities in Michigan. Key findings include: • Identification of three white-cedar community subtypes in unharvested stands • Classification of six community types in harvested stands • Analysis of ecological gradients affecting community composition • Potential pathways of compositional transition after harvest These results are crucial for forest management planning and stewardship, offering forestry practitioners a more nuanced understanding of white-cedar ecosystems and their responses to harvesting. The Invasive Weed & Restoration Ecology Lab at UC Davis is currently exploring the use of “competitive planting” as a method for weed suppression in restored grassland communities. As part of a USDA-funded project, we are evaluating what seed mixes can best facilitate the establishment of native perennial bunchgrasses while also preventing reinvasion of problematic weeds, in particular invasive annual grasses. Some of our preliminary results suggest that including native annual wildflowers along with native grasses could be the best way to increase “invasion resistance” in restored California grasslands. This approach could improve the long-term sustainability of restored grasslands while also reducing management inputs required to control invasive weeds.
