A renewable integration doesn't equal a depreciation in energy efficiency. A recent study by the University of Leeds reveals that renewable energy systems like solar and wind can offer similar or even better net energy returns compared to fossil fuels, especially when considering the efficiency of energy use. This challenges the notion that fossil fuels are inherently more energy-efficient. As we already know, investing in renewable infrastructure is crucial not only for mitigating climate change but also for ensuring future energy availability and improving global living standards. Vice President of Marketing at REsurety | Helping clean energy buyers, sellers, and investors achieve their financial and sustainability goals through software and services.
In this video, Lee Taylor discusses driving demand towards the highest carbon abatement impact.
Defining "green" isn't about choosing Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) over carbon offsets or vice versa; it's about the real impact on carbon abatement. Let’s break it down: Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) represent the environmental attributes of electricity generated from renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. RECs are usually viewed separately from carbon offsets because, in developed countries, wind and solar projects typically do not qualify for carbon credits. Carbon offsets are credits representing the reduction of one metric ton of carbon dioxide or its equivalent in other greenhouse gasses. High quality carbon offsets require a strict assessment of measurability and additionality. Both high-quality and lower-quality RECs and carbon offsets exist. 👉 The goal should be to drive demand towards the highest impact and highest quality products, whether RECs or carbon offsets. Both should be measured by how much carbon they actually abate and the real impact they have on reducing carbon emissions, not just the quantity held. What are your thoughts on the best strategies for real carbon reduction?
