Improving Inpatient Discharge = Better ED Patient Flow As any emergency physician knows, efficient patient flow and minimizing boarding of admitted patients in the ED is critical for providing quality care. One major factor impacting ED boarding is the availability of inpatient beds. When inpatients aren't discharged in a timely manner, it creates a bottleneck in patient flow and backs up the ED. Improving the discharge process on inpatient floors is key to opening up beds for new admissions from the ED. Some strategies for better discharge management include: - Earlier Discharge Order Entry - Encouraging providers to enter discharge orders earlier in the day allows case managers to start the discharge process sooner - Multidisciplinary Discharge Rounds - Having nurses, case managers, social workers, and providers round together helps identify barriers to discharge - Enhanced Discharge Instructions - Providing clear, understandable instructions improves the likelihood of a safe transition of care - Data Monitoring - Tracking key discharge metrics like LOS and discharge times by unit/provider to identify opportunities By improving the discharge process down stream, we can reduce boarding in the ED and provide better care. Inpatient discharge management should be a top priority for any hospital aiming to enhance emergency care. #PatientFlow #EDBoarding #Patientsatisfaction

Specialized rehabilitative care is an essential part of regaining independence and returning to an active lifestyle following an amputation. A national study found that receiving inpatient rehabilitative care immediately after acute care is associated with reduced mortality, fewer subsequent amputations, greater acquisition of prosthetic devices, and greater medical stability than for patients who were sent home or to a skilled nursing facility. #amputationrecovery #rehabilitationandamputations #amputationawareness
