What a weekend. It was a challenging time as my youngest, who is autistic, required emergency surgery for appendicitis. In healthcare, I believe everyone strives to deliver good service. Despite facing an urgent medical situation, reasonable adjustments are crucial in providing consistent care. As Paula McGowan OBE emphasises, listening to parents and individuals is essential, considering the nuances in neurodiverse presentations in clinical settings. During our 72-hour ordeal, we interacted with over 20 professionals. While most were polite, only 4 introduced themselves with #hellomynameis yet I needed to trust them with one of the most previous things in my life and I didn't even though their name. Effective communication, like that of the surgeon (who was outstandingin her communication and interactions with my dsughter and us as parents), is paramount. She ensured informed consent and addressing concerns we had and adapted to my daughter. However, the inconsistency in communication among the nursing team was evident. Advocating for my daughter was necessary, especially when some nurses made us feel like burdens. Our experience underscores the importance of training in learning disability and autism in healthcare. Let's prioritize reasonable adjustments and ensure that #hellomynameis becomes a standard practice, even in the busiest of times. Join me in booking the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training promptly. Time is precious, and every moment counts for our loved ones. #healthcare #autismawareness #patientadvocacy

What do management consultants 💼 and medical doctors ⚕ have in common? 🤔 Apparently, a love for MECE frameworks MECE = Mutually Exclusive, Collectively Exhaustive 👴 Just wrapped up my Geriatric Clerkship Rotation. During a tutorial, I couldn’t help but chuckle at an “Approach to falls in the elderly framework” our awesome Geriatric consultant drew out for us (See attachment, I'm sorry about my handwriting) 🙇♂️ 💡 Aside from fun frameworks - Geriatrics has been extremely rewarding, here are some key learnings: 1️⃣ What are your goals? - It is critical to know what our elders want out of the rest of their days, it’ll dictate care and help the team work towards them. Unfortunately, turning the clock back 40 years isn’t an achievable goal (for now at least). 2️⃣ Prioritize according to your goals - Our elders often have multiple co-morbidities, issues and the polypharmacy to go along with it. Geriatricians has to keep your goals in mind to know the best course of action. 3️⃣ Look at the whole picture for your answer - Geriatricians are one of the most holistic specialists out there, truly encompassing the biopsychosocial aspects of care (e.g. working with a team to see how a home is best suited for elderly living). I'm excited to see how the next rotation further integrates my past and present experiences moving forward! Have you guys found synergies between your past experiences and your current life? Do share below or drop a DM, would love to hear from you. 😊 In the meantime, take care of yourself, and if you can, someone else too! #consulting #medicine #business #healthcare #learnings

Looking forward to providing this session to improve geriatric PT practice!
QU PT is excited to host another great continuing education event: The 5M Model: What it means for Geriatric PT practice and education with Professor Karen Blood. Read the course description below, or click the link for more information and to register for this event. In 2017, Mary Tinetti introduced the medical community to the 5Ms of geriatric medicine. The 5 elements of Mind, Medications, Matters Most, Multicomplexity, and Mobility are now being infused in physical therapy education and are the foundation of the upcoming revisions to the Essential Competencies for the Care of Older Adults for Entry-Level Physical Therapy Practice. In this session, attendees will be introduced to this framework and will learn to apply this framework to best practices in geriatric physical therapy. Topics to be covered include a movement system framework for older adults, polypharmacy and how physical therapists play a role in the deprescribing process, current topics in older adult mental and cognitive health, addressing the multicomplexity in the care of older adults, and linking all topics to what matters most to our patients and clients. Case studies will be used to promote engagement and application to clinical practice. This event will be on Thursday, July 25 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on our North Haven campus. https://lnkd.in/en23yarK

The Career-in-Medicine Psy-Op: Take what we give you, don't ask questions. Sounds like a recipe for being underpaid and burnt out. So stop it. Someone out there wants to pay you more to do the same job you already do. 𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙣'𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙡𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢?!? Hospitalists Emergency Medicine clinicians Anesthesiologists cardiac Surgeons CRNA's Cardiologists Gastroenterologists Critical Care RN's and NP's If you fall into nearly any specialty as a clinician, you can find positions that demand your skills and are willing to pay for it. Go on your specialty job boards and forums, the jobs are there. The baby boomers are exiting the workforce, leaving behind jobs in their wake.
