Should higher ed be everything to everyone? I’m noticing a trend right now in that direction: - community colleges offering 4-year degrees - liberal arts schools offering hard science specializations - public university systems offering PhD programs. There is nothing wrong with adapting and evolving. It’s critical if schools hope to remain relevant. Society is changing; higher ed should, too. But those changes should be guided by fulfilling your school’s unique mission. Who are you here to serve? You can try to be everything to everyone. But in my experience, schools succeed when they are true to themselves. #highereducation #highereducationleadership

It's been just about 3 weeks since I received the only individual award for the 2023 Vice Chancellor Teaching Fellowship as presented by the VC Sir David Bell himself at the University of Sunderland's Learning and Teaching Conference. Since then, I've already managed to speak to so many people about the work that I'm doing, proving there is both a need and hunger to get involved. My project will focus on creating a toolkit on #DecolonisingTheCurriculum which in the first instance will serve as guidance for staff on how to not only decolonise their curriculum (who could've guessed!) but how to think about the historically authentic, accurate and equitable knowledge they want their students to know. It will ask academics staff to reflect on if the knowledge is truly a representation of marginalised voices (such as #socioeconomic status, #ethnicity, #genderidentity and #neurodiversity - to name a few). I've had so many amazing conversations and emails with colleagues in faculties outside of my own and I've been a sponge with all the resources, readings, podcasts and seminars I've been in - even applying to present at a few conferences and even a book chapter proposal which 2022 me would have never dreamed of doing (whether my proposals will be accepted is another story but small steps count). Onwards and upwards as I continue on this journey into my own professional development and work on making higher education a place where all students feel as though they truly belong. #highereducation #professionaldevelopment #culturalcompetency

The Australian education system needs to evolve to meet the demands of the 21st century. In our latest blog post, we explore the limitations of the ATAR and propose a multi-pronged approach to reform, including a greater emphasis on competency-based assessment, stronger VET pathways, and school-led innovation. We believe it's time to move beyond a narrow focus on academic achievement and embrace a more holistic view of student success. Values Higher education is not a neutral terrain; it has consistently embodied distinct values. Whether rooted in liberal arts, scientific inquiry, or vocational training, each academic pursuit has a set of underlying principles. Universities serve as places for shaping perspectives and molding societal attitudes. From fostering critical thinking to promoting cultural norms, higher education actively transmits values. Acknowledging the values of higher education should be celebrated. Take a look at the mission statement of any institution of higher education to see the values that are the core of the institution. Students can determine what institution aligns with their values. This is why we have 4,000 institutions of higher education and not just Ivy League institutions. #highereducation #highered #higheredleadership #values

Good to see this direction from ASPA. It builds on the work of #AustralianLearningLecture which developed Beyond ATAR: a proposal for change. The position paper represented an extended collaboration with leading educators, academics and policy experts following ALL’s second lecture where global education leader Charles Fadel challenged Australian educators to improve the transition from school to work and study. The proposal put forward three inter-locking recommendations including designing a Learner Profile as a common way of representing the full range of attainments that young people gather during their transition years and urging tertiary education providers adopt broader, more transparent entry criteria and pathways that align with learner’s aspirations and abilities. Intriguing questions in this article about ways to shorten the amount of time it takes to complete a degree, while still maintaining the integrity of academic programs. Time and money are real barriers to education for many students, and this is a prime area for higher ed to rethink some of its traditions and assumptions. (Also, great to see Chancellor Lori J. Carrell, Ph.D. and the University of Minnesota-Rochester highlighted for the innovative work they have been undertaking in this regard!) "Yes, reducing time reduces cost, but this effort isn’t just about money. The idea is to redesign the curriculum using evidence-based practices that support solid learning—the kind of innovation that promises a real payoff. The first cohort to complete the new, accelerated program at Carrell’s University of Minnesota-Rochester campus will graduate in December." #highered #studentsuccess #access #povertyinformedpractice #equity #curriculum #innovation https://lnkd.in/dirwMCc7

🎓 Confidence in higher ed has fallen to new lows. Shocking! College was the primary rite of passage for our culture. We believed that knowledge was power and that university was the primary path toward this knowledge. Then, somehow, our culture started speaking out of both sides of its mouth: 🔬 Follow the Science! ✊ Science is racist! Now, university is more or less a super expensive box that must be checked before one can get on with one's life. There are many reasons. I'd love to hear your opinions. Friends involved in higher ed, what is to be done? #university #education #riteofpassage #highered #culture

The Quest for Truth, Goodness, and Beauty in Education, Organizational Health, Instructional Excellence, and Third Space Design.
"Classical education has seen a strong revival over the past four decades. This revival has occurred in both the private and public sectors of education. It spans theological creeds, educational models, and state lines. It even extends outside the United States. This revival spans curriculum providers and publishers, colleges and universities, charter school companies, home educators, and even our own political structures. As the health and importance of this influence inevitably grows in the coming generation, it is only right to recognize and honor those who have continued to be the top voices and leaders in this historic recovery, year after year. Some individuals on this list are speakers and authors. Some are entrepreneurs and thought leaders. Some are researchers and politicians. Some are corporate executives. Some are college professors and beloved board members. Whatever post or position an individual may hold, we recognize them for having taken that opportunity to advance the cause and case of classical education in honorable and substantive ways." https://lnkd.in/ePA9SDYX
