Mining mitigation work carried out on TRU Huddersfield station site
Network Rail and BAM UK & Ireland have completed a programme of mine #mitigation works at #Huddersfield station as part of the The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU).
Huddersfield station in West #Yorkshire is being remodelled as part of the #TranspennineRouteUpgrade (#TRU) – a multi-billion-pound #railway #infrastructure scheme funded by the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom and delivered by #NetworkRail.
The works at the station involve a new platform layout, increasing the number of tracks from three to four, #construction of a new #footbridge, and restoration of the station’s #roof canopy.
#Mine mitigation works were needed to probe, treat and infill voids within old coal seams under the site before moving ahead with the upgrades.
Network Rail, working together with #BamNuttall and its ground investigation division #BamRitchies, started probing into the seams in August 2023.
The project team worked on coal seams roughly 15-20m below ground. They have now been backfilled with cementitious grout across the station footprint.
Overall, large areas of the TRU route are underlain by #historical mine workings, which forms one of the most complex elements of the scheme.
Project info
The TRU project aims to deliver major #improvements and capacity increases to one of Britain’s #oldest railways. This will be done by fully electrifying the route, adding track, installing new digital #signalling and carrying out station #upgrades.
By increasing the capacity of the line, the transport of large freight containers across the Pennines will also become possible.
The 122km Transpennine route between #Manchester and #York, via #Huddersfield and #Leeds, serves 23 stations, crosses dozens of bridges, passes through 10km of tunnels, and goes over 29 level crossings.
The upgrade scheme is divided into three programmes: West of Leeds, Leeds Central and East of Leeds. These will be delivered through dedicated alliances and project teams.
The West of Leeds Alliance (TRU West) is responsible for work between Manchester and Leeds. It will carry out the electrification and resignalling of 68km of railway, while working on more than a dozen stations.
TRU West comprises Network Rail as the owner participant, and Amey, Bam and Arup as non-owner participants. They are supported by a #supplychain of 15 sub-participant companies, all with particular skills and expertise. These include Tony Gee and Partners, COWI and AtkinsRéalis as #engineering designers, and Bam Ritchies and Structural Soils as specialist #geotechnical contractors.
