A few quotes that jumped out at me: (1) "You have to look at the tools you have and see how you can apply them to achieve the effects you need. You may have to start with one tool and then swap it for another. Not all the tools you have will be appropriate to what you are trying to do." (2) "The challenge of strategy is matching military outcomes to political expectations." (3) "In applying operational art, you have to look up to strategy as much if not more than you look down to tactical application. We tend to default down." Very insightful article. Sun Tzu said Know the enemy and know yourself in a hundred battles you will never be in peril. When you are ignorant of the enemy but know yourself, your chances of winning or losing are equal. If ignorant both of your enemy and of yourself, you are certain in every battle to be in peril.

“Senior military decision-makers need the chance to appreciate AI’s ability to improve everyday outcomes today, not in some science-fiction future.” Too often, AI is either hailed as a solution to everything or the road to dystopia. For military leaders, we need a better discussion grounded in the ways AI is already transforming decision-making today, not tomorrow. In a new article featured in the recently released 2023 Fletcher Security Review, Dr. Rob Spalding, Brig Gen, USAF (Ret), President and CEO of SEMPRE (Secure EMP-Resilient Edge), pulls from concepts from his book, "War Without Rules," to discuss China's new doctrine of warfare. He goes on to outline three concepts the West must embrace to advance a counter doctrine that both embodies Western principles and effectively opposes what Unrestricted Warfare represents, stressing that an inability to do this will result in a world that tilts toward authoritarianism.
