The UK’s data regulator is “making enquiries with Microsoft” regarding a new feature that captures screenshots of your laptop every few seconds. Microsoft’s Recall feature, designed for its upcoming Copilot+ PCs, will store these encrypted snapshots locally on the device. However, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) seeks more information on the product’s safety, with privacy advocates branding it a potential “privacy nightmare.” Microsoft asserts that Recall is optional and emphasises its commitment to privacy and security. Users can control which snapshots are collected, and the data remains local, inaccessible to Microsoft or anyone without device access. The company states that a hacker would need physical access and sign-in credentials to retrieve stored screenshots. An ICO spokesperson highlighted that companies must “rigorously assess and mitigate risks to peoples’ rights and freedoms” before launching new products. They confirmed they are investigating the safeguards Microsoft has implemented to protect user privacy. Recall can search through users’ past activities, including files, photos, emails, and browsing history, and takes screenshots frequently, which privacy expert Dr. Kris Shrishak warns could have a “chilling effect” on users’ behaviour. Microsoft claims that privacy was integral to Recall’s design, offering users control over what is captured and allowing them to exclude certain websites. For instance, private browsing on Microsoft’s Edge browser will not be recorded. Nonetheless, Dr. Shrishak and Daniel Tozer, a data and privacy expert at Keystone Law, expressed concerns about the implications for privacy and consent, likening the system to a scene from the dystopian TV show Black Mirror. Jen Caltrider from Mozilla’s privacy team cautioned that those with your password could access more detailed history, potentially including law enforcement or Microsoft if policies change. She warned against using Recall for sensitive activities, suggesting that it could expose users’ private information. Microsoft maintains that Recall will not filter out information from screenshots containing sensitive data, which raises additional privacy concerns. https://lnkd.in/e6BNZbMm

This is...creepy? Microsoft Recall will be able to capture, store and "recall" all digital activity Even with all of their assurances that it won't be misused, you'd need some serious safeguards to convince most people, let alone organisations with sensitive data, to even consider going with something like this. #AI #InternetPrivacy #DataPrivacy
