Lee Odess’ Post

When describing consumer locks on the market today, we should refer to them as "digital locks" instead of "smart locks." The terminology we use is important, especially to consumers. And being honest matters. #security #securityindustry #accesscontrol #smartlocks #digitallocks

And thanks to [you know who you are], I updated the tagline on my profile to "digital locks" versus "smart locks"

Lee Odess, are you sure "digital" is the best term to use? The root of the word comes from the Latin "digitus" or "digitalis", which refer to fingers and toes. Ask your doctor what tech is needed for them to perform a "digital examination". I checked a contemporary definition and found, "(of signals or data) expressed as series of the digits 0 and 1". My mathematics teachers would disagree about 0 and 1 being "digits" when used in this manner; they're "bits" or "numerals". What is your best definition of "digital" when paired with "lock"?

Agreed! Ive been using the term “digital keys”. Seems to click a bit quicker with the customer when discussing a move from physical to digital keys. If they have no experience with access control this is even more important!

I often define them by residential vs commercial but that misses the mark as well since so many of our conversations around wireless locking today is in fact residential but in a multi-dwelling capacity.

I could not agree more that the terminology that we use is important! We have an obligation to get these things right
