Big Oil’s sustainability transition: What’s the future for S’pore’s energy sector? Summary: The energy sector in Singapore is at a crossroads, with major industry players considering significant changes due to growing pressure for sustainability. Shell is currently evaluating the viability of its plants on Pulau Bukom and Jurong Island, a move which has sparked discussion about whether the company might sell or decommission its plants. Meanwhile, ExxonMobil, despite facing similar sustainability pressures, remains committed to its operations in Singapore and has announced a multibillion-dollar project to produce lubricant base stocks expected to launch in 2025. The shift towards sustainability is seen by the Economic Development Board (EDB) as a promising opportunity for growth in Singapore's energy and chemicals sector. As the world moves towards a lower-carbon economy, sectors such as energy and chemicals need to innovate and transform. Mr. Damian Chan, Executive Vice-President of the EDB, commented that Singapore aims to achieve its climate goals by both decarbonising existing industries and fostering growth in the green economy.
