Imagine someone asking you to research their great grandfather but only allowing you to use 6.25% of the available genealogical records for the research. That seems ridiculous! But that is the limitation most people unknowingly place on themselves with DNA research. In this session you will learn: ~How to calculate DNA coverage (the percentage of an ancestor’s DNA you are using for research) ~Collaborating with relatives who have already tested ~Who to test next for the best coverage ~Descendancy research considerations and strategies ~Tips for recruiting testers Learn more about the event: https://lnkd.in/gxB5ri5y To get on the SGS DNA Interest Group email list, contact SGSDNASIG(at)seagensoc.org. #GenealogyClass #DNA #GeneticGenealogy #FamilyHistoryResearch #SeattleGenealogicalSociety #Seattle #FamilyTree #LegacyTree #LegacyTreeGenealogists

Today's genealogical tip! Regarding Genetic Research: Each person has a genealogical and a genetic family tree. *A genealogical relationship is measured in generations. It can include everyone. *A genetic relationship is measured in centimorgans (cMs). It only includes some - albeit many - of a person's kin. Most people have 23 chromosome pairs. *We inherit one-half from our father and one-half from our mother. So does a sibling, but the mix may be different. That is why siblings look different. Although identical twins inherit identical combinations. *On average, we inherit 25% of our DNA from each of our grandparents. #research

‘Tracing beneficiaries can pose many seemingly insurmountable challenges. Promising leads can become entangled in a web of uncertainty. It is then one must use different methods to trace individuals. A method we have found particularly efficacious in instances such as these is the use of newspaper archives.’ Read our latest blog post by our Research Administrators, Conor Corder and Samuel Till explaining how newspapers can open up cases and provide the core pieces necessary to complete the puzzle that is genealogical research: https://lnkd.in/ef4vtB9K #genealogy #genealogicalresearch
