𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 - 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿... Transactional fundraising can get the money in quick (or at least within your financial year). Think marathon places, charity shops, trading or paid for places at events. This fast money can also: ➡️ Be the entry point to relationship fundraising (sometimes) ➡️ Help deepen existing relationships (as extra stewardship opportunities) ➡️ Enhance new business An existing calendar of events for example can help win corporate partnerships - as they "add value" to your pitch. This type of fundraising is much more likely to generate unrestricted income. It's also understood and loved by non fundraisers - as they get the value exchange and like the speed. Although, the downside is - it can be expensive to set up, it generally needs volume to work and the majority of donors are going to churn. That's why the focus is on honing a great offer for a niche market.  For example, not everyone is going to run a marathon every year, but the marketing to get new runners (who are most likely to raise more than the minimum sponsorship) can run on repeat. Transactional fundraising - can be a reliable source of unrestricted income that can grow year on year. 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲.  𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝘂𝗻𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲. But if done well, the donors stick around and the donations can be considerably larger (either in themselves or over their life time value).  Because there's an emotional connection and investment from the donor. Relationship fundraising can grow a donor base of repeat income year on year (which offers reliability and sustainability).  Striking the balance between transactional and relational fundraising can be super advantageous. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗻𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗺𝗶𝘅 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝘂𝗽....𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘀: ➡️ Transactional fundraising is great for "in year" unrestricted income (if you're willing to invest in it upfront).  ➡️ Relational fundraising, can be much more lucrative from less people who are more likely to stick around year on year - and help you attract a look a like audience (if you're willing to be patient, compelling and fundraise out of year). ➡️ Don't try to chase transactional people for a relationship (most don't want one), and don't expect relational people to move at the speed of transactional ones.  Listen to your fundraisers when they tell you: 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿-𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 - 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿-𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁... Here's what I look for in a Fundraiser...   ---> They have a willingness to DO   I'll take an untrained, inexperienced Fundraiser any day of the week. I'll take Rachael Ray back when she staggered onto the set of a TV cooking show. Unpolished, rough around the edges, a little deer-in-the-headlights. But determined, focused, and a force to be reckoned with. That's the Fundraiser I'm looking for.   ---> They understand the integration of messaging and marketing   A successful Fundraiser doesn't sit in the corner. They dig in and get familiar with all the moving parts in that organization - analyzing the kind of messaging that gets a response. A great Fundraiser buckles down and learns the art and science of marketing.   ---> They are willing and able to be a voice in the organization   A great Fundraiser is a driving force in the organization. Over time, they learn to lead with power vs. force. (Most don't do this well out of the gates. It's a process. An Executive Director helps nurture that.)   ---> They are willing and able to take a lead role in staff meetings and in the Boardroom   It is critical for a Fundraiser to hear the Board's point of view on raising money. A Fundraiser who is valued in an organization can see and hear everything.   ---> They are willing to criticize   After 3 months of being in the organization (and assessing what is and isn't working), a great Fundraiser should bring criticism to the table. It is not enough to come into an organization and do what's already been done indefinitely. A successful Fundraiser brings valuable insights and a strong and substantiated point of view to the organization.   ---> The willingness and enthusiasm to communicate with and deal directly with human beings every single day

Fundraising expert. Those words jumped at me as I settled in to read my morning email. The world has slowly started to re-engage following a global pandemic. The scramble is on to find a new side hustle, escape the shackles of a desk job and so the proliferation of fundraising experts has begun. My in-box is flooded with email messages about project management, donor relations, non-profit management. Self titled fundraising experts telling me that everything that has been done in the past is wrong. The cacophony of noise is excruciating. Here's my response: You are not an expert just because you say you are. If you pride yourself on never being part of the machine of fundraising yet extol yourself as an expert, then you are part of the problem. Surprisingly, fundraising is not all about donors. A Development Department exists to serve the organization. If you don’t show up every day trying to serve the mission of an organization, then do not show up on social media and tell me that your one person consulting organization has anything to say to me as a senior leader in an organization with a mission. The constant barrage of consultants who are “tired of the fundraising field and all the mistakes that have been made” is hurting our profession. The constant drip of negativity is a drain on the field. So, you wrote a book. Based on what? If you haven’t held a job in this field for the past 10 years, then anything you have to say is irrelevant.  And to those of you repost those posts and agree 100% with everything these noise makers say, you too are part of the problem. Negativity breeds negativity. These voices who write books are always on the lookout for their next gig, their next speaking engagement. They make a living on building misery in a field that should be filled with joy. Speaking out is one thing, but relying on a crutch of misery casts a shadow on this profession. Here's what I know: Donors are not a project. Every gift and every donor matters.  A Development Department cannot be all things to all people. There is a business side of fundraising. All the details matter. Showing up is more than just showing up.  Time management and good boundaries are critical. Some donors will choose to leave an organization. It’s okay. Hard conversations allow for exponential growth. No is an answer. Engaging the next generation of Development professionals is essential. Fill up your staff on meaningful dialogue and solid training, not with the junk food of critical naysayers who have built a life on tearing down a professional that has many noble practitioners. To my many colleagues and friends I have met along this 20 year journey – take heart. You are courageous to be part of this field. It is an honor to connect our organizations to donors. You are making a difference. Every day you are making a difference. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise.
