3 Reasons businesses struggle to hire good people: 1. Lack of understanding about what's important to the best candidates 2. The mission is more important to people than companies think. We've consulted with a few charities and mission-driven orgs recently, and solving these issues is actually quite straightforward when you have the right data and strategy in place. ‘The world does not need another recruitment company’ 4 years ago when I started thinking about starting my own recruitment company this was the basis of the blueprint, you might be thinking … Come on mate? But you are one aren’t you? Yes but No. Our thinking was who needs another company shouting that their USP is that they are ‘ethical’ or ‘honest’ or they have integrity ...blah blah ..for us thats what we should be regardless. Everyone should be doing their work in this way. So me and my mate Lucy Reeves started Marvel on the basis of 3 things. People over Profit… We wanted to be a force for good. Put good people in good companies, we donate some money to charity and the world is a better place. Thats the mindset, you do business in the right way. Not the easy thing, the right thing. Thats why we became B Corp last year, it sums up the way we work and do business. Inclusive recruitment… Let’s face it, there is a ‘type’ that gets the job and for us thats just a poor show. Everyone deserves a brilliant career no matter who you are. We exist to level the playing field. From anonymised CV’s to No CV.. we are stretching the boundaries in the space. We will continue to innovate in this space. Giving back…. We wanted to create a sustainable business model through Marvel that enabled us to give back to charity every time somebody was placed. In comes the 1% model. For every candidate we place we donate the equivalent of 1% from their salary out of our fee to the Marvel Foundation.We have a target of £200,000 in 5 years, we are currently tracking at £140,000 in 3.5 years. You see everyone in our business follows the blueprint and we genuinely believe this creates a culture where we all look forward to the work we are doing and it also helps us better ourselves doing lots of good stuff. My own consultancy work is woven together by the intricate threads of the 5 R's: Recruitment (where are you getting you new opttortunities from?) Retention (how are you ensuring existing customers, donators, members, And supporters stay?) Revenue (how are you making sure your opportunities are yielding the maximum return?) Referral (have you a robust programme that generates opportunities within your own data and communities?) Reactivation (in most cases, not losing sight of a lapsed cusomer, member or supporter is easier than finding and paying for a new one?) Ensuring these activities are structured and embedded in to the ethos of the business works in our experience.

The secret to money-making is time. If you're reading this and you want to become wealthy, You need to understand this principle. Time must be spent on one of two outcomes. 1. Money saved. 2. Money made. If you make $100 per hour, why would you not spend $10 to save an hour? These opportunities pass you by every day, TIME is everything. When you understand this, You will spend your time wisely. Every moment you let go by. Every missed opportunity. You are spending the only thing that matters. TIME.

A returning client asked me an interesting question last week.   ‘I know we have worked together before, but I'm hoping you recruit for finance roles too?’   I had the privilege of working with this client previously on a director level role but in a different discipline. As they said, there are several recruitment consultancies and agencies that work exclusively in the finance recruitment space, but they wanted to come to us first because we knew them, we “got them”. We knew how the charity functioned, how the team worked together, the values of the organisation and what it would take to thrive with them. But do we work in the finance space? The simple answer was yes! And I had multiple tangible examples of director level, Head of and a Manager role in the last 6 months to give as examples. Over 80% of our business is repeat/based on recommendations, and giving our clients an experience they want to return for, and a successful partnership and outcome to repeat, is something we pride ourselves on.
