Today I witnessed something which made me want it to share, picture someone typing on their laptop while standing in a crowded local train. It shows how people try to keep up with work while dealing with the chaos of daily life. They're totally focused on their work, typing super fast, attending meetings and sending emails. You can feel the urgency in their movements, showing how demanding their job is. But there's more to this scene than meets the eye. This person has to juggle deadlines and tasks while commuting to their home from work. It's not just about getting work done it's about finding a balance. Are they even aware that in the middle of their busy day, it's important to take breaks and relax. This story reminds us that life is like a tightrope walk between work and personal time. While being able to work from anywhere is convenient, it also means we have to be careful not to let work take over our lives completely. It's all about finding the right balance and making sure we take care of ourselves along the way. #law #lawyers #work #balancedlife #lawstudent #lawyersoflinkedin #lawyerwellbeing

Who owns your time? Being entirely responsible for your own billable hours is probably the heftiest double-edged sword of self employment. But when it starts to feel heavy, I think about this: A decade ago, I was a salaried employee at an editorial agency. The expectation was that 7.5 hours of every single day be billable to a client. If you happened to empty your queue, you had two choices: 1) Lie and pad your time; 2) Turn yourself in and let a manager invent a task that justified the agency covering that time (typically you would be asked to clean the break room, I shit you not). The micromanagement was so intense, one April Fool's I distributed a prank memo informing my department they would have to start logging their bathroom breaks. It wasn't taken for a joke. Add in the fact that we were all painfully aware that the client was being charged 5-6x more than we were being paid for an hour of our time, and it's no wonder that the atmosphere was so thick with ennui. Am I working harder for myself than any agency job I've ever had? Of course -- and not just because I like my boss. Self employment just IS more work. It's also: -Freedom to have complete transparency about rates with clients and to manage those relationships according to my own ethics -The ability to work according to my body's natural rhythms -Work/life balance -Not having to clean expired yogurts out of the break room fridge because I'm running ahead of schedule

Work/Life Rhythm and How it Differs for Each Generation Although many refer to it as work/life balance, I prefer to use the term “work/life rhythm” which can be used to describe how your job and associated tasks fit in with the rest of your life. Finding your work/life rhythm looks different for everyone. Each generation brings their own preferences and unique ways to be productive. From structured schedules to flexible hours, discovering what works best for you is key to thriving not just professionally, but personally as well. 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬? There is a school of thought that you should only work your contractual hours and keep evenings and weekends as your own time. Indeed, some lawyers outwardly apply this to their own careers. For a regional lawyer a “work-life balance” is often packaged up as - “be a great lawyer, but don’t put yourself into an early grave by lawyering all the time”. In other words - you can have a great career and enjoy your life. Online, posts which support a “work-life balance” will typically be more popular than ones which suggest you should work discretionary extra. This is true to such an extent that rarely will you see a good counter-argument for working over and above contracted hours (for free), because of connotations that it’s “harmful” to you in some way. This is a fair point, isn’t it? But what if the “majority” were in fact a “silent majority” and believed that ad-hoc discretionary extra hours was beneficial for your career? We would suggest that the overwhelming majority of senior associates, law firm partners (and especially equity partners, also known as business owners) think that the idea of working strictly to contracted hours is maddening career advice which has the potential to harm your career - sometimes before it’s started. Here, the thought is that working “a bit” of discretionary extra time is not only good, it has a win:win impact because it helps you excel in your career. In a business such as a law firm, “excelling” in your career could be: - Reading around your subject in your own time to help you become better at your job more quickly - The difference between securing a client and not - The advantage you gained to win a case - Becoming well regarded by the partners at your firm resulting in you being rewarded in some way - Becoming well regarded by other lawyers - who will be more likely to talk you up when they have the opportunity So, as you can see, there are strong counter arguments to working extra, just as there is to sticking to your contractual hours. Now, you may be someone who hates the idea of checking emails on your holiday. Equally, you may be the type of person who believes some checking and replying to emails on holiday will help retain an important client, which is less stressful than letting them wait. Be mindful that viewpoints on platforms like this can present one view, and that a “silent majority” may have an opposing view. Or a more realistic position may be that both have merits depending on context. Which position do you apply to your own career? Are you part of the “silent majority” who believes that working over and above your contracted hours can be beneficial for your career? #recruitment #careeradvice

⚖️ Balancing Career and Personal Life as a Lawyer ⚖️ As legal professionals, balancing the demands of our careers with maintaining a fulfilling personal life can be a challenge. The legal profession is known for its long hours and high-pressure environment, but achieving balance is crucial for both our well-being and effectiveness as advocates. Throughout my journey as a lawyer, I’ve learned that balance requires intentional strategies and a commitment to self-care. Here are some insights that I hope will help others in the legal field: Set Clear Boundaries 🚧 Define Work Hours: Establish specific work hours and stick to them. Communicate these boundaries to colleagues and clients to manage expectations. Designate Personal Time: Prioritize personal activities such as family time, hobbies, or relaxation. This is essential for recharging your mental and emotional energy. Prioritize Tasks 📋 Use Time Management Tools: Utilize tools like calendars and task management apps to organize your workload efficiently. Prioritizing important tasks helps reduce stress. Learn to Say No: Recognize your limits and don’t hesitate to say no to additional responsibilities when you're already stretched thin. Embrace Technology 💻 Leverage Legal Tech: Utilize legal tech tools for document management, communication, and research to streamline work processes. This enhances efficiency and frees up time for personal life. Remote Work Flexibility: If possible, embrace remote work options. This flexibility can help you manage your time better and reduce commuting stress. Foster Supportive Relationships 🤝 Build a Support Network: Surround yourself with colleagues, mentors, and friends who understand the demands of your profession. Their support can provide valuable emotional relief. Communicate Openly: Keep an open line of communication with family and loved ones about your work commitments to manage expectations and strengthen relationships. Invest in Self-Care 🧘♂️ Prioritize Health: Regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and sufficient sleep are vital for maintaining physical and mental health. Mindfulness and Relaxation: Incorporate mindfulness practices like meditation into your routine to reduce stress. In conclusion, balancing a legal career and personal life is an ongoing effort. Implementing these strategies can lead to better well-being and success in both areas. Together, let’s support one another in this pursuit! 💬👇 #WorkLifeBalance #LegalProfession #SelfCare #LawyerLife #MentalHealth #CareerDevelopment #Leadership #AamirParwez
