LSAP Publishes 2024 Legislative Session Summaries Each year the Legal Services Advocacy Project (LSAP) compiles a comprehensive review (with citations) of Minnesota law changes that, in whole or significant part, impact legal aid’s clients. LSAP is a statewide division of Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid (MMLA), which provides legislative and administrative advocacy on behalf of all legal services programs. LSAP attorneys Jessica Webster, Ellen Smart, and Ron Elwood work on discrete and systemic policy issues that affect the lives of thousands of Minnesotans every year. Private practitioners are core to legal aid services With approximately 80% of legally aided grants of assistance being provided by private practitioners in Victoria, it's clear how central they are to the viability and effectiveness of the legal aid scheme, and similar schemes across Australia. It underlines why it's critical that legal aid commissions and governments understand and adapt to conditions that foster viable private practices, including in regional and remote locations. It also reinforces the necessity for private practitioners to share their views on the operation of legal aid schemes, including what factors incentivise participation or create barriers. Just as private health professionals make a massive contribution to the health of the nation under publicly funded initiatives like Medicare, so too do private practitioners contribute to access to justice efforts nationally, delivering services in child protection, family law, family violence, criminal law and other domains. I strongly urge private practitioners to participate in the ground-breaking census of legal aid private practitioners commissioned by National Legal Aid. The results will inform the ongoing operation of viable schemes, providing critical evidence to commissions, governments and the public more broadly about the centrality of private practitoners to providing these critical services. National Legal Aid has engaged researchers from the Social Policy Research Centre at UNSW Sydney to conduct a survey of Legal Aid Private Practitioners. The results of the survey will inform the future work of Legal Aid Commissions with private practitioners and also an important body of evidence for the advocacy of National Legal Aid nationwide.
