In partnership with GRM Intelligence, I am beyond excited to bring my audience of law firm and in-house leaders, a conversation with someone I personally consider to be the worlds number one legal sector strategist, Jordan Furlong I am honoured that Jordan will be joining me on my podcast on Monday. We will release the conversation on Tuesday (17th), once the Production team have worked their magic. After what has been another exciting 7 days in the African legal markets, I think it's time we caught a breath, took stock and openly discuss this rapidly changing industry and the strategies firms and teams need to deploy going forward. Let me know if you have any questions you'd like me to pose to Jordan.

The discussion of AI in my interview of Paul Shim was one of the most interesting parts of our conversation. Most high-level practitioners I've interviewed have told me that they and their firms aren't really using AI in day-to-day practice. So it was interesting to hear Paul talk about ClearyX and how it's being used in due diligence—and how it produces work product that's often better than what junior associates can generate. Of course, Paul stressed to me that ClearyX's work is checked by (human) lawyers before it goes out the doors of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP. So there's no need to worry about a ChatGPT fail, like that of the litigators who filed a brief with fake cases—a brief they didn't bother to check before filing. Like so many other things lawyers rely upon, AI is a tool, and it can be used responsibly or irresponsibly. I think some lawyers need to fear AI less and instead figure out how to use it responsibly.
Highly recommend listening to this interesting and inspiring podcast interview with my partner and friend Paul Shim by David Lat. Paul talks about his experience growing up, the early influences on his career, and some of the important trends impacting the M&A practice (including antitrust regulation and the role of technology providers (such as ClearyX) in supporting client work. Listening to this podcast was another reminder of how fortunate we are at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP to have market-leading practitioners like Paul, who achieve legal excellence and maintain their deep sense of humanity.
