The removal of federal DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) programs feels like a step back in a journey that’s far from complete. While these programs aren’t a perfect solution, they represent an acknowledgment of the work needed to foster understanding and equity in a society that often struggles to “play nice.” Their absence begs a crucial question: if not DEI, then what? Programs are tools, not panaceas. They set standards and create spaces for growth, but the true measure of progress is the culture they leave behind. When these tools are taken away, what systems, accountability, or cultural shifts will ensure we don’t regress? Without intentional efforts, history shows us that exclusion, bias, and inequity fill the vacuum. Evolving as a country means more than policies or programs—it’s about sustaining conversations, empowering diverse voices, and committing to fairness as a shared value. If we remove one vehicle for progress, we must ensure we’ve built a stronger, more effective one. The question isn’t whether DEI programs are perfect but whether we’re ready to take responsibility for the work they’ve started.
