"Reviving Workers' Bargaining Power Amidst Evolving Tech" talks about the need to address the decline in workers' bargaining power as technology advances. The decline in workers' bargaining power has led firms to adjust the number of workers rather than the hours worked per employee in response to business cycle fluctuations. This decline in bargaining power is attributed to various factors, including the proliferation of practices that enhance monopsony power in labour markets and weaken workers' bargaining power. https://lnkd.in/eAzAMeye

*Good Morning* 🌄 ⚡️ HR Word of the Day *Strike in Detail* Strike in Detail refers to the individual refusal to accept employment offering payment below the union-decided standard. In this scenario, workers decline job offers that fail to meet the predetermined wage levels set by the union. This form of strike arises from the collective demand put forth by the union, to which management has not consented. 🔍 **Challenges Faced by Organizations:** 1. **Unemployment Concerns:** 🛑 Workers refusing low-paying jobs may face unemployment, impacting both individuals and the organization's productivity. 2. **Union Response:** 💼 Unions may provide unemployment benefits to members rejecting substandard job offers, further complicating the situation. 3. **Labor Supply Reduction:** 📉 Reduced labor supply for low-paying jobs can disrupt recruitment strategies, leading to staffing shortages. 4. **Union Influence:** 🤝 Employers may be compelled to comply with union regulations due to labor shortages, potentially impacting organizational autonomy. 🔧 **Strategies for HR to Overcome Strike in Detail:** 1. **Address Unemployment Concerns:** 💡 Explore alternative employment options and negotiate with unions to revise wage standards. 2. **Facilitate Communication:** 📞 Serve as a liaison between management and unions to foster constructive dialogue and negotiation. 3. **Implement Flexible Compensation:** 💰 Explore performance-based pay or profit-sharing schemes to incentivize employees while maintaining cost-effectiveness. 4. **Promote Engagement:** 🌟 Foster a positive work environment with recognition programs and professional development opportunities. 5. **Ensure Legal Compliance:** ⚖️ Stay updated on labor laws and regulations to mitigate legal risks associated with industrial action. By adopting a proactive and strategic approach, HR can effectively manage industrial disputes and contribute to organizational success. *Have A Great HR Day* 🤠 #hrword #strikeindetail #industrialdisputes #legalcompliances #unioninfluence #laborsupplyreduction #employment #individualrefusaltowork

The number one reason workers unionize may surprise you. It's not always about wages. In many cases, it's because they feel undervalued and unheard. Once employees start feeling this way, the battle for their loyalty is often already lost. That's why it's crucial for employers to prioritize positive employee relations at all times, not just when a union is trying to organize. Experienced HR, safety, and legal professionals know how to help employers treat their employees fairly and avoid costly union battles. Any C-suite that doesn't have a place at the table for these experts is rolling the dice. Remember, investing in your employees' satisfaction is a win-win scenario.

One of the primary functions of labor unions is collective bargaining. By negotiating with employers, unions strive to establish fair employment terms, including wages, working hours, and benefits. This process allows employees to have a unified voice, strengthening their position in negotiations and creating a balance of power between workers and management. Moreover, labor unions contribute to the establishment of standardized labor practices. Through the negotiation of collective agreements, unions help set industry-wide standards that not only benefit their members but also contribute to the overall well-being of the workforce. In terms of worker empowerment, labor unions provide a platform for employees to voice their concerns collectively. This collective strength enhances the job security of workers and protects them from arbitrary decisions by employers. Despite the positive contributions of labor unions, they face various challenges. Opposition from some employers, legal constraints, and changing economic landscapes pose significant hurdles. Furthermore, globalization and technological advancements present new challenges for labor unions. The interconnected global economy and the rise of automation require unions to adapt their strategies to remain relevant and effective. In conclusion, the essence of labor unions in an organization is deeply rooted in the historical struggle for workers' rights and the pursuit of fair and just working conditions. While they face challenges, the enduring importance of labor unions in shaping the world of work cannot be understated. The essence of labor unions lies in their ability to foster collaboration, promote fairness, and contribute to a more equitable and balanced employment landscape. #YourEverydayHR

WASHINGTON January 23, 2024. Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su issued the following statement in response to the Bureau of Labor Statistics release of its annual Union Membership data: “The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported an increase in union membership, with 139,000 more union members in 2023 than in 2022, meaning this country has 400,000 more union workers than we had in 2021. The gains under the Biden-Harris administration underscore President Biden’s commitment to being the most pro-worker, pro-union president in history. We have seen large private sector increases in unionization among health care workers, transportation and warehousing workers, and in educational services. These are workers who recognize that they have power and are organizing to use that power. Workers in health care, auto manufacturing, transportation, entertainment and more have delivered big wins at the bargaining table in the past year. It is also important to acknowledge that public support for unions is the highest we have seen since the 1960s. More than two thirds of wage and salary workers say they would consider joining a union." All the more reason for human resources to focus on EX, Employee Experience, which includes the journey an employee takes with your organization. It includes every interaction that happens along the employee life cycle, plus the experiences that involve an employee's role, workspace, manager, and wellbeing. A great start is to map the journey and the thinking-as this will give you insight into needs anticipation and ways to deepen the relationship and the employee's professional development. Invite a new hire and tenured hire or two to help with accuracy. You do this from their perspective, not the company's and you learn about things you do not know! #humanresources #shrm #hr #hrinnovation #business #operations
