800,000 children under the age of 12 live in refugee and host communities in Ethiopia, Tanzania and Uganda. How can children cope when they are a long way from home? Learn during conflict and crisis where classes are over 100 students? Or cope with being separated from friends and family? Playful teachers, safe schools and supportive communities make a huge difference. Enid, a teacher in a refugee settlement in Western Uganda, was introduced to the approach of learning through play in 2022. For children who have lived through challenges and uncertainty, play serves as a powerful tool for building resilience. Play is a fundamental component of their learning, wellbeing, and development—building their creativity and problem-solving skills and promoting their social and emotional health. In 2023, PlayMatters introduced the LEGO Six Bricks concept. The approach was created by Care for Education (CFE) and is based on the creative application of six LEGO® bricks to educational activities. With the support of CFE, the Six Bricks approach is currently being adapted and implemented by the PlayMatters Consortium across Ethiopia and Uganda. International Rescue Committee, #WorldRefugeeDay

It's heartbreaking to know that 800,000 children under 12 in Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Uganda live in refugee and host communities. These children face immense challenges: separation from loved ones, learning in overcrowded classes, and coping with trauma. This resonate a lot with our mission which is to foster resilience and wellbeing in these young lives who have been affected by the worst change in their immediate environment. We believe in the power of playful teachers, safe schools, and supportive communities. Enid exemplifies our vision by using play to enhance children's creativity, problem-solving skills, and social-emotional health. Together, we can build a brighter future for these children.

Amazing. LtP encourages creativity and a lifetime love of learning while supporting language, cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. We should encourage play-based methodology both at home and in school settings. Communities should be well engaged and should allocate spaces for children to play, but these areas should also be friendly to all children. 😍 This methodology creates a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere, allowing teachers and learners to interact positively. This helps build trust and rapport, making learners feel more comfortable and valued.

Fine initiative! SInce 2018, we educated 278 staff in 12 African countries, including Ethiopia, Tanzania and Uganda. As the practical part of their six month education in attachment-based care and learning, they have trained local groups of parents, foster parents, refugee staff, teachers and social workers, covering some 35.000 high-risk children and youth. Our training programs are now in Swahili, Kinyarwanda, Amharic and Somali, designed in close cooperation with partners. Best wishes from www.fairstartfoundation.com in Denmark.
