🔴 Meet #REDDIE consortium partners   Introducing: Radboudumc   🏥 Radboud Universitair Medisch Centrum is one of the largest academic teaching hospitals in the Netherlands. RADBOUDUMC Department of Internal Medicine focuses on impaired awareness of hypoglycaemia and the role of inflammation in insulin resistance. Their work strongly emphasizes translational research and is supported by collaborations with various departments, including experimental radiology, nuclear medicine, and the Radboud Institute for Molecular Life Sciences (RIMLS). RADBOUDUMC coordinated the innovative EU-funded Hypo-RESOLVE project aimed at reducing the burden and consequences of #hypoglycaemia in people living with diabetes by enhancing the understanding of hypoglycaemia using a comprehensive multilevel approach consisting of basic, clinical, psychological/behavioural, and health-economic research. 👉 In the REDDIE project, RADBOUDUMC mainly contributes to WP4, validating real-world evidence against data from randomized controlled trials, particularly utilizing insights from the Hypo-RESOLVE database. ISS:40 - 1984 : 2024 Celebrating 40 Years of ISS In 2015, ISS launched the MetaOx, a groundbreaking instrument for biomedical research. Designed to provide critical insights into tissue oxygen consumption, the MetaOx represents a leap forward in understanding cerebral oxygen metabolism. By combining three advanced technologies, FDNIRS (Frequency-Domain Near-Infrared Spectroscopy), DCS (Diffusive Correlation Spectroscopy), and pulse oximetry, the MetaOx delivers quantitative measurements of hemoglobin concentration, blood flow, and oxygenation. With this data, researchers can determine the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen extraction (CMRO₂), providing vital information for conditions ranging from neonatal care to stroke recovery. Funded by an NIH SBIR grant and developed in collaboration with leading researchers from the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging and the University of Pennsylvania, the MetaOx continues to support breakthroughs in infant, pediatric, and adult care. Nuroflux are excited to announce the initiation of a scientific research project with the Yale School of Medicine! We will seek to understand whether our novel metric for continuous brain blood flow measurement, Electrocardiography Brain Perfusion index (EBPi), can detect delayed cerebral ischemia - a significant predictor of poor outcomes in patients that have suffered from subarachnoid hemorrhage stroke. This important research will expand on our existing clinical evidence base and demonstrate the versatility of our device in the continuous and objective monitoring of all stroke patients.

Registrations are open for the 1st Edition of the ADVANCED TRAINING IN NEW IN VITRO MODELS: ALTERNATIVES TO ANIMAL MODELS IN RESEARCH, at NOVA Medical School - Faculdade de Ciências Médicas. This course, organized by Claudia Nunes dos Santos and me, is the first in Portugal to explore emerging in vitro models such as organoids and microphysiological systems. Eighteen researchers from eight national institutions and a top foreign institution will present examples of how these new models can be applied to fundamental and pre-clinical studies involving a variety of organs (retina, brain, intestine, liver, lungs, skin, breast, heart, tonsil, vascular system, among others) and several diseases. Exciting News 🎉 Thrilled to announce that my first-author paper is now published in JGP ! In this study, we unravel the mystery behind why identical mutations in voltage-sensing domains (VSDs) of cardiac sodium channels (Nav1.5) can lead to different functional outcomes—a crucial question in understanding channelopathies. 📖 Read the full paper here: [https://lnkd.in/gQSQMPpY] 🔬 What’s new? ✅ Using 120 µs molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with external electric fields, we captured VSD state transitions and pinpointed differential structural dynamics in equivalent mutants. ✅ New Insight: We observed transient leaky conformations in some mutants, providing a structural explanation for gating-pore currents—a key mechanism in ion channel dysfunction. ✅ Our salt-bridge network analysis revealed VSD-specific, state-dependent electrostatic interactions, explaining how mutations selectively disrupt gating. 💡 Why does this matter? These findings reshape our understanding of how mutations at equivalent positions in VSDs can cause distinct effects, highlighting the importance of structural context in Nav channel function. This work lays the foundation for future studies on the molecular basis of ion channel–related diseases and precision medicine approaches. UF Biomedical Engineering's Dr. Jamal Lewis, Ph.D. and his team at UF received an Invention of the Year award at Standing InnOvation! 🏆🔬 Dr. Lewis, an associate professor, focuses his research on how cells “eat” particles, or phagocytosis. Partnering with Ph.D. candidate Clinton Smith, an NSF Graduate Research Fellow, he developed a groundbreaking way to deliver drugs directly to the brain – a critical advance for treating brain disorders with limited therapeutic options. 🧠💊 The team’s invention at the UF Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering harnesses the unique properties of a fungus called Cryptococcus 🦠, which has the rare ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, a natural shield that often prevents drugs from reaching the brain in high enough levels. Currently, most therapies are delivered through the veins, limiting their effectiveness for brain disorders as they struggle to bypass this barrier. This often results in lower drug concentrations reaching the brain, reducing their impact and leaving many disorders under-treated or without effective therapies. By attaching drug-loaded particles to this fungus, Dr. Lewis and his team can bypass these challenges, delivering treatments directly to affected areas in the brain where current therapies fall short.
