2023 Wrapped. In April, SDA’s Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA) was depicted for the first time in, a virtual/tactical event through the integration of T1 Tracking and Transport layer at NIMBLE FIRE. Exercise NIMBLE FIRE is the Department’s only Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) operator-in-the-loop modeling and simulation capability supporting the Chairman's top five critical joint IAMD capabilities: wide-area surveillance and engagement quality tracking, pre-launch interdiction, non-kinetic post-launch capabilities, ballistic missile discrimination, and increased weapons ranges and lethality. #SemperCitius #Defense #Space #Missiles #PWSA #SDAWrapped

#TWISH • In 1963, the MIDAS 8 satellite was launched, marking a significant advance in missile detection technology. As part of the Missile Defense Alarm System, this early warning satellite played a crucial role in the Cold War era, enhancing national security with its infrared sensors designed to detect intercontinental ballistic missiles. MIDAS 8's mission showcased the importance of space technology in global defense and set the stage for modern satellite-based surveillance systems. Honoring the innovators and engineers who contributed to this groundbreaking project, we remember MIDAS 8 as a pivotal step in the evolution of early warning systems. We are excited to continue our work with #NewSpace companies. GEOST is subcontracting to Sierra Space to provide 16 of its Mercury missile warning and missile tracking payloads to be integrated with SDA's Tracking Layer Tranche 2 satellites. Tracking Layer Tranche 2 is set to begin launching in 2027, the Tranche 2 Tracking layer will both enhance and replenish the capability provided by Tranche 1 by increasing the overall number of SVs to enable complete near global stereo coverage for missile warning, missile tracking (MW/MT) capability and provide preliminary fire control (FC) capability for missile defense (MD). For more information on SDA's Tranche 2 Tracking layer check out our factsheet here: https://lnkd.in/ggX8D7HP https://lnkd.in/eXVM58ds #SemperCitius #PWSA #Defense #Space #Satellites #Industry

Getting on Track: Space and Airborne Sensors for Hypersonic Missile Defense Center for Strategic & International Studies 19 Dec 2023 The CSIS Missile Defense Project is pleased to release a new report, Getting on Track: Space and Airborne Sensors for Hypersonic Missile Defense. The study reviews the Department of Defense’s efforts to modernize its elevated sensor architecture, which is necessary to defeat future missile threats. Drawing upon in-house computer modeling and simulation capabilities, the report analyzes the Pentagon’s current approaches, visualizes key technical tradeoffs, discusses options for constellations with mixed orbits, and identifies several potential pitfalls. Missile Defense Project director Dr. Tom Karako and the report’s lead author Masao Dahlgren will present an overview of the report's analysis and recommendations. The conversation will then proceed with a panel discussion with John D. Hill, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space and Missile Defense; Colonel Alexander Rasmussen, Chief, Tracking Layer, Space Development Agency; Richard Ritter, Program Executive for Sensors, Command and Control, Missile Defense Agency; and Ryan Tully, Strategic Forces Lead (Majority), Professional Staff Member, House Committee on Armed Services. The discussion will explore policy objectives, programmatic efforts, tradeoffs between orbits and inclinations, requirements for fire control quality tracking, and how constellation designs affect capability phasing for regional and global coverage.

Good morning and Happy holidays! There will be no Building our Defense editions next week. It will be tough, but I’m sure you’ll all be able to muddle through without it. A relatively quiet week as the DoD, VCs, and nearly everyone else in the ecosystem prepare for the holidays. Plenty of action still in the Red Sea as the Houthis achieve strategic effects using cheap tactical weapons. Still, they’re about to the “find out” part of the FAFO cycle. Dive in to these and other issues surrounding aerospace and defense technology. #defense #militarynews #defensetechnology #aerospace #defenseinnovation https://lnkd.in/eyfyuSxN
