On Fridays I like to spend a little time thinking about beer. Established ‘craft’ brewers Epic and Brothers called in receivers recently. That’s so tough for the founders, their employees, suppliers and all the families touched by the situation. Their beers are good and the reasons for their demise seem to be rising costs and falling sales. I’ve yet to understand why decent beer in NZ costs as much as decent wine. Maybe that’s why sales languish in the current economic climate. Another problem for the sector is choking competition, per the photo below. 350 choices all fighting for fewer $? A fixture that looks like an explosion in a lolly factory? A festival of wacky product names? Is the sector over-due for a shake-up in corporate strategy and product marketing? A little differentiation here and there? Too much to hope for pricing equivalent to 'mass market' beers I suppose?#brand #strategicmarketing #sales

Museums and galleries play a pivotal role in our society. They help educate almost a million school children annually, welcome over 17 million domestic and international visitors, and contribute $272 million in annual GDP. Give a minute.
Morrinsville Gallery joined a nationwide campaign by Museums Aotearoa, Keep the Lights on for Museums and Galleries, to emphasise the value of galleries and museums in New Zealand and highlight the existential risks they face. "Morrinsville Gallery is grateful to our council and supporters for the funding we receive; unfortunately, like many galleries and museums around New Zealand, this is simply not enough to cover our ever-increasing costs while funding sources are decreasing, and we may need to think of new financial strategies for our future," says Gina Barreto, Director of Morrinsville Gallery. Museums and galleries play a pivotal role in our society. They educate almost a million school children annually, welcome over 17 million domestic and international visitors, and contribute $272 million in annual GDP. Yet, Museums Aotearoa highlights that the value they bring to New Zealand's education and tourism sectors needs to be adequately reflected in the amount of local and central government funding. "Your support is invaluable to us. Whether through donations, sponsorships, purchasing art from our Purely Pastel Exhibition, or buying a gift from our retail store, every action you take makes a difference. Your words hold power, amplifying our visibility and fortifying our funding applications. Consider sharing your message of support on social media or writing to us about what Morrinsville Gallery means to you. Your voice matters. Museums and Galleries Matter" says Gina Barreto, Director of Morrinsville Gallery.

The LTP sounds boring but there are nuggets of interest for how we want to live in Auckland. Strategies for stadiums, public transport, port land and the waterfront, parks and provision for more housing and so on. With $ numbers on the choices that relate back to how big you want your rates bill to be. The document is well written and well presented. If you are a jaffa you should take a look and have your say.
People of Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland - only a few days left to submit on Auckland Council's Long-term Plan. This year’s focus is on making do with what we have, while spending where it is needed most. We’re looking to do things differently, and we want your feedback on where we should do more or less, faster or slower or do things more cheaply. Don’t miss your chance to have your say – we need your input by midnight on 28 March. https://lnkd.in/gXEGkc-p

In NZ today there is discussion of the probable axing of Newshub and the future of news journalism here. I'm always proud of the work my son does and the contribution his mahi makes to telling important stories. In a broader sense this piece (about the people not the politics) also illustrates the value of independent journalism. #journalism #news #media
Warning: Disturbing content. It's been an honour to work as editor alongside Jomana Karadsheh, Mick Krever and the CNN investigative team on this piece, telling the story of Roba, a young woman from Gaza who survived an air-strike, buried under the rubble of a warehouse whilst her four siblings died around her. https://lnkd.in/gT6erbYW

So, the Brewers Association of NZ has released data showing that the demand for beer has declined 4.4% down in the last 12 months, faster than anytime in the past 15 years. No doubt correctly they believe this is due to 'general economic constraints'. One specific constraint I can think of is the unprecedented rise in the price of beer over the last twelve months. One of my favorite brews has gone up 20% in the same period, another by 16%. The Brewers Association should be celebrating the sacrifices their loyal customers are making in the face of 'economic constraints'. #beer #consumerbehavior #inflation #business https://lnkd.in/gV5u9R_E
