🌟 Think Waterford First! At the recent Waterford Chamber board meeting, we had a productive discussion on how to better support our city and local businesses. I can’t emphasise enough the importance of shopping local. Reports by EY and RIKON, the research arm of SETU, highlight Waterford as a City of Opportunity. However, the data reveals a staggering retail leakage of over €600 million—an eye-opener for all of us. While it’s disappointing, this also presents a tremendous opportunity for retailers looking to invest here. To attract more businesses, we need to prioritise local spending. Every purchase helps keep our community vibrant and thriving. The Chamber Gift Card scheme is a fantastic way to support this initiative, with over 100 participating businesses—from shops and restaurants to services and more. Let’s come together to support our local economy and ensure that Waterford is a place where retailers want to invest. Together, we can make a significant difference! #ShopLocal #ThinkWaterfordFirst #Waterford https://lnkd.in/emmqabfP

Think Waterford First! Pictured leaving our Waterford Chamber board meeting tonight with Georgina Carpendale (Toms) @Ronan Mulligan @Niall Griffan We discussed so many important issues all which focus on driving Waterford on. As a Waterford business owner I think it’s hugely important we all support the Chamber voucher scheme. By keeping the money in our City & County we make sure that we keep people in jobs and help Waterford to continue to grow & thrive. Chamber vouchers can be spent in well over 100 shops, pharmacies, boutiques, restaurants, supermarkets, liquor stores, wine shops, travel agents, shopping centre, sports shops, furniture stores, music shops, hotels, pubs, children’s adverture centre, book shop, beauticians, butchers, photography, garage, electrical, opticians, florists, shoe shops, bicycle shops, jewellers, office & printing, DIY, car 🚗 shop, and much more. There really is something for everyone. “A rising tide lifts all boats” Together we can do so much. Have industry overcome the throw away culture? In all elements of life and industry, we surely now understand the necessity to respect all resources and decrease unnecessary consumption. Certainly, manufacturing understand this as it relates directly to profit but is this true in #realestate? There can indeed be an end to the efficient and usable life of buildings when their operation and maintenance becomes unsustainable, both financially and environmentally, but in some cases, the vision to undertake quality refurbishment to upgrade facilities to the highest standards and in doing so, eliminate huge volumes of CO2, certainly lags. Well done to Sunrise Properties and the complete team involved in reinvigorating Rugby 661, to best in class! The results speak for themselves. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e78Qx9Bc

I cannot say that indoor golf practice ranges are a thing in this area. However, we were hired to investigate one that was installed in this area. To get a proper height for the range, the contractor had to remove a section of the floor slab of the slab-on-grade with stem-walls home, dig down about 4 feet, and pour a new concrete floor and walls. Essentially, the section of the building with the practice range was lower than the original foundation walls. If you are thinking, "Wow, that could be tricky," you wouldn't be wrong. So, why wasn't an engineer involved before a contractor was hired to install it? Bringing in an engineer after the fact is not the right order in this process because important elements of the work are hidden from view. Trust me, the rumors about engineers and inspectors having X-ray vision are not always true. If you are going to do something to your house that not many other neighbors have done, you need other expertise than the company that is doing the work. If you have a construction contractor who says an outside expert or permits are not needed, you probably should be looking for another contractor.

Chris Ralph, grounds manager at Plymouth Argyle Football Club, knows that maintaining consistent, high-quality playing surfaces across the club’s grounds is essential for performance and safety. With a wealth of experience that spans both golf and football, including stints at Torquay United and now Plymouth Argyle for the last six years, Chris has seen firsthand how Mansfield Sand’s products can elevate pitch quality. "When I moved to Plymouth Argyle using Mansfield Sand was a natural choice," Chris explains. "Our contractors also recommended it, so when we decided to upgrade to a hybrid pitch, we went with their 90/10 rootzone blend." The club recently underwent a pitch transformation, installing a SIS hybrid system with a 90/10 rootzone mix from Mansfield Sand. This blend, made of 90 percent sand and 10 percent organic materials, offers the ideal balance for aeration, drainage, and stability—especially crucial for the demands of high-level football. “We also took out about 1,400 tonnes of Fibresand from the old stadium pitch and moved it to a training pitch,” Chris explains. “This upgrade has massively improved the quality of that pitch.” In his role, Chris oversees maintenance not only for the stadium pitch but also for the training ground and academy surfaces. His team of six relies on Mansfield Sand’s products for consistency across all locations. “Sand is hugely important. Once you get the right product, it helps maintain drainage rates and keeps things uniformed across all the sites ensuring the pitches are consistent.” Chris plans to incorporate periodic mini-renovations on the new hybrid pitch, using Mansfield Sand’s products to keep the surface clean, smooth, and high-performing. “We’ll probably add around 16 to 20 tonnes a couple of times over the season,” Chris notes, emphasising the importance of ongoing care in maintaining the surface’s quality. Reliability is also key for Chris and his team, and Mansfield Sand has consistently delivered. “We’ve never had any issues with their products,” Chris says. “They’re clean, high-quality, and always delivered on time. Gary Cunningham, our contact, is always available to help out whenever needed.” With Mansfield Sand’s support and high-quality products, Chris and his team have found a trusted partner in maintaining Plymouth Argyle’s pitches.

The Pinewood Derby isn’t just a race—it’s a blueprint for building a successful business. Last night, I had the privilege of speaking with my kids’ Cub Scout pack about the rules of the Pinewood Derby. While the event is focused on designing and racing wooden cars, the lessons apply just as much to running Pro221. Here’s how the core principles of the Pinewood Derby translate into the world of commercial services: 1. Teamwork: In the Derby, teamwork involves Scouts brainstorming and building with their families, where parents guide but the Scout leads. In business, teamwork happens between my company and our commercial clients. Whether it’s a restaurant owner looking to maintain a welcoming storefront or a property manager needing pristine sidewalks for tenant satisfaction, collaboration is key. The best results come when we’re working together toward a shared vision of excellence. 2. Creativity: The Derby encourages Scouts to stand out—whether by designing for speed or creating a car that catches everyone’s eye. Creativity gives them an edge. For commercial cleaning projects, creativity is about approaching challenges with ingenuity and precision. A weathered parking lot, a grease-covered restaurant kitchen, or a stained office exterior each presents unique obstacles. Success lies in finding the right combination of techniques and tools to achieve results that exceed expectations. 3. Follow the Rules: The Derby has strict guidelines to ensure fairness. Those who excel are the ones who innovate while staying within those boundaries. Commercial cleaning is no different. Rules in this industry include compliance with safety standards, environmental regulations, and agreed-upon service contracts. At Pro221 , we embrace these parameters—they’re not restrictions but rather a framework that fosters trust and accountability. By respecting these guidelines, we ensure every project is completed safely, responsibly, and to the highest professional standards. 4. Have Fun: The Derby isn’t just about winning—it’s about the joy of creation, problem-solving, and camaraderie. Similarly, in business, the satisfaction isn’t just in the final outcome but in the journey itself. For me, there’s nothing quite like seeing a business transform, knowing that a cleaner, more inviting space will positively impact employees, customers, and visitors. It’s rewarding to know that our work contributes to the success of another business. The Pinewood Derby may seem like a simple childhood event, but its lessons extend far beyond the track. In commercial cleaning, as in the Derby, collaboration, creativity, integrity, and passion drive success. What’s your “Derby car” in business? What challenges are you tackling, and how are you staying on track to reach your goals? Let’s connect—share your thoughts or let’s explore how we can work together to bring your vision to life.
