I’ve told this story before but its relevant and timely as coral spawning has been happening. In 2013-15 my company SOI and Southern Cross Uni and Sustainable reefs tried to get approval and funding to conduct some coral planting and restoration around high tourism areas of Green Island, which received 500,000 tourists a year back then. As part of the process we spoke with Elders from Green Island for permission and their input. They explained that traditionally, thousands of years, they stopped fishing and going out on to the reef for a period of time after coral spawning. They recognised it was the reef doing something very important…and they respected that. And left it alone. This hit me like a tonne of bricks… What do we, non indigenous Australians do? With our incredibly fleeting experience of living with the GBR? We let tourism and everyone use the reef 365 days a year. No acknowledgement of special natural events, letting the reef rest, do its thing. Imagine how that must feel for Traditional Owners to witness!!! 🤯😢 I just felt so ignorant in that moment…and ashamed…saddened…😞 Even though I’m passionate about and working to help the reef, and ‘educated’ and have best intentions. I and the majority of reef managers, researchers are not educated in the way Traditinal Owners are… I’m not saying the reef is not managed well…I’m just agreeing it is long over due for TO involvement in a greater way and good to see this plan. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Onward and upward…well done to everyone helping this happen. . #coralreefmanagement #greatbarrierreef #traditionalownerknowledge

Where there's no room for metropolitan challenges like climate adaptation. Where a healthy and safe living environment isn't a given for everyone. And not everyone can move freely. Therefore, I am going to create space! By getting more people on bikes across Europe. By sharing what's obvious for us in the Netherlands, with the rest of the world. Helping cities take the first steps towards becoming bike-minded. How? By initially focusing on bike parking, promotion, and marketing. We're problem solvers. From planning to implementation. This creates accessible opportunities for the emerging bike city. Are you feeling frustrated with the slow pace of the mobility transition in your city? Alongside filmmaker @Nick Skymczak, he's creating a documentary series on digital nomads.
