According to the CDC, “drowning is the cause of 4,000 fatalities in the U.S. annually, and the leading cause of death in children ages 1-4 years old. 8,000 visits to the emergency departments are also made annually for non-fatal drownings.” The statistics are alarming; We NEED policy change. We need increased education on water safety for communities as preventive measures, and we need more lifeguards with continued skill training. Please share to continue to advocate for the public health crisis that is water-related injuries and fatalities! https://lnkd.in/eZMDhJYG

Some solid ideas here.
I have decided today to share my unsolicited personal opinions on some Tower Climbing & Rescue industry short comings I have mentally noted over my lengthy career as a Tower Climber and Instructor. All comments in favor of, or in disagreement are encouraged. I have been in the industry and climbing for 30 years. I have been a Tower Climber & Rescue Instructor for 15 years. Here are a few of my observations. 1. The industry leaders need to get their heads out of their asses! We are the only industry that allows a climber to fall up to 21' before we stop and they call this "successful". This is unacceptable! There are dual 6' SRL's that will almost always stop a fall within inches. As well SPRAT techniques should always be taught and incorporated in training and onsite. The proper use of ropes and SPRAT techniques is much safer than not using them. 2. When "surprise" rescues are incorporated into Tower Climbing & Rescue Training, pay attention to who is taking charge and who is jumping into action. It is almost never the "experienced" and "senior" crew members that perform the rescue. This needs to change, these guys & gals need to be challenged throughout the training and through the recertification process. 3. Practice Rescues. How many throughout the year are mandated by ANSI? I will tell you ZERO! How many are required from most employers? Almost always exactly what the standard requires. And that is zero again. Unbelievable right? So we expect our "At heights" workers to perform complex and sometimes dangerous rescues that they only are required to perform once a year. 4. 911 calls. What is the second thing a Dispatcher asks? What is your location? Almost never can a crew member recite the address to a tower site. JHA/JSA/STA's are, almost all electronic now. We have just about done away with the paper versions on the seat or dash of the Crew Leads truck. How about the address to every Tower site be on a two sided sign 2' x 2' permanently attached to the fence or base of the tower. Also 911 calls should be practiced at least once a week during tailgate meetings. Making that 911 call during an emergency or a Rescue situation when chaos is happening should be muscle memory. 5. Trauma first aid kits should replace the fire extinguisher at the climbing leg or ladder at the base of the tower. The fire extinguisher should be placed at the outdoor equipment cabinets or at the shelter door. Tourniquet use and application training should be mandated with First-aid/ CPR certifications. 6. "Safety Climb" inspections top and bottom and proper adjustments should be part of Tower Climbing & Rescue Training. Binoculars should be required in every Crew Leads company truck. Drones also should be able to be utilized and encouraged for initial pre-climb inspections. * The above statements are my personal opinions. * If you made this far, thanks for reading this.

With the warm weather we are all experiencing daily, we would like to share some tips on how to stay safe around water, including pools, lakes, or oceans: 1. Pay close attention to children or inexperienced swimmers you are supervising in or near water. 2. Learn how to recognize the signs that indicate someone is drowning. 3. Know how to safely assist someone who may be drowning, such as "reach or throw, don't go." 4. Know CPR and first aid. Let us know if these tips are helpful! #tuesdaytips #water #safety #webelongatliberty #belongingatliberty
