What's inside? Suspense until the end! Here is my online shopping experience that turned into a scary movie. If not for environmental concerns, at least the costs of excessive packaging and shipping should be a concern for businesses. I prefer to look at it from a positive angle, though. It means that before we reach a point where complex applications don't have sustainable packaging solutions or they are not yet scalable, there are many easy wins that don't require special expertise or investments, just some common sense. This is an example where sustainability efforts align with improving the bottom line. There is at least an 80% opportunity here for cost and materials reduction! In my corporate job, we have been striving to reduce millimeters because, at scale, those millimeters represent significant savings. Cases like these will be addressed through the EU PPWD (Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive) under the aim to eliminate and reduce excessive packaging. By January 1, 2030, the directive sets the following targets: - The maximum empty space ratio for grouped, transport, or e-commerce packaging is 50%. - Packaging should be designed with the minimum weight and volume necessary for its functionality. However, there is no need to wait until 2030 to address packaging cases like these. Businesses should refrain from incurring costs (or passing them on to consumers) for packaging that adds no value but only frustrates consumers. Because it's counterproductive for the business. Do you see cases like this in your daily life? Why do you think they exist? #packaging #sustainablepackaging #cost #ppwd

Reducing the Carbon Footprint of E-commerce Logistics: All-Inclusive Scopes 1, 2, and 3 Growth in e-commerce has put the environment on the line, which is highly influenced due to emissions from transportation in logistics operations. An e-commerce company that handles such an issue correctly would have to take an integrate approach of tackling their emissions across all three Green House Gas Protocol Scopes. Scope 1: Dealing with Direct Emissions of Owned Fleets Scope 1 emissions for e-commerce firms relate to companies' fleets of owned or leased vehicles with fuel use associated with delivery, warehousing, and associated operations. Companies may be able to reduce direct emissions through improved fleet efficiencies, vehicle electrification-alternative fuels, and sophisticated route planning. Scope 2: Reducing Indirect Emissions Related to Purchased Energy Scope 2 emissions are associated with the fulfillment centers, distribution hubs, and offices. Programs address on-site renewable energy and energy-efficient upgrades, in addition to procurement of green power from utilities. This supports the decarbonization of e-commerce activities regarding their energy use. Scope 3: Addressing Indirect Value Chain Emissions The most intricate are Scope 3, which include upstream logistics, purchased goods, business travel, waste disposal, and downstream distribution. In terms of bringing these indirect emissions into the corporate strategy, there is really no possible way to do this except through close collaboration with the supply chain partners by use of strategic sourcing, employee engagement, and circular economy principles. A Data-Driven Holistic Approach Now, to handle the issues related to carbon footprint, the first step that e-commerce companies need to take is setting a baseline through capturing comprehensive data with regards to emissions across all Scopes. Armed with this information, they would then be able to formulate various targeted strategies that include: Electric/ Alternative Fuel Vehicle Adoption Route and Load Optimization Collaboration with logistics partners Packaging solutions for sustainability Investment in renewable energy in facilities The holistic data-driven approach allows e-commerce companies to reduce their environmental impact but also enables cost reduction, brand reputation enhancement, and mitigation of climate change.

𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐄𝐔 𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 & 𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐯𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝗶𝐧 𝘁𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲 🌍✅ The new EU Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation (#PPWR) was voted on in the European Parliament today. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧? Firstly, good news for Mother Earth, as this regulation will bring ambitious targets for the recyclability of packaging, the use of recycled materials, quotas for reusable packaging, and an overall reduction of packaging waste per capita in the EU by 15% by 2040 (compared to the base year 2018). Secondly, tough times for businesses that put products in packaging on the market, particularly those who sell cross-border via e-commerce channels.
