👗I've always wanted to be a Fashion Designer. Or a Scientist.🧬 As a child, my playtime was split between sketching and stitching garments for my dolls and examining nature through a microscope toy. When it was time to choose, I went for biology because, honestly, my drawing skills were okay for a 10-year-old but not for the Fashion Academy. But pursuing a research path meant years of low-paid work until a grant came through. Coming from a modest background, that wasn't an option for me. So, I turned to learning sewing and pattern making, working as a seamstress even with my degree. It was tough on my ambition and my parents, but I believed in finding my place in fashion someday. After years of freelancing and traveling, learning the ins and outs of the industry, fashion began embracing technology and sustainability. Could there be a better mix for someone who loves both science and fashion? I dived into the intersection of technology and fashion, finding a perfect match for my passions and skills. And I realized I wasn't alone. Technology is making the fashion industry more inclusive. 💼 How to land your first job in design: Pro tips from Quintin Williams Let’s face it: the job market is nuts. Every year, the competition seems to get fiercer and fiercer – and the design industry is no exception. So how do you get spotted if you’re just starting out, fresh out of college, university, or design courses? Here's expert advice from Quintin Williams, a seasoned sneaker designer and professor at SCAD: 1️⃣ Understand Manufacturing: It's essential to know how products are made. This knowledge allows you to design feasible projects that can actually be produced, making you a more attractive candidate. 2️⃣ Embrace Ideation: Don’t hold back on your creative process. Start with sketching and gradually integrate digital and AI tools to enhance your designs. Complement your ideation process with the right toolbox, not vice versa. 3️⃣ Find a Mentor: This is crucial. A mentor can guide you, introduce you to their network, and help you navigate the job market more effectively. Join various professional groups and proactively engage with more experienced members for feedback and guidance. 4️⃣ Leverage Your Network: Show your work online and offline. Use platforms like LinkedIn and Behance to showcase your portfolio. Maintain a strong online presence and don’t forget about good old cold emailing – it may be exhausting and disheartening at times, but it’ll be worth it. 5️⃣ Stay Hungry: Approach every day with the mindset that you need to continuously improve and seek feedback. I recently had a conversation with a parent whose child was about to embark on a graphic design degree. She was lamenting about limited job opportunities, how many graduates don't end up in the field, and the threat only getting greater with generative AI. I couldn't disagree more, and I shared as much. Having a design education has been a game-changer for me. It’s not just about creating visuals—which frankly I'm not actually that good at. 🤷♀️ The real benefit is learning and practicing critical thinking and solving problems creatively and analytically. My design education gave me practice in breaking down complex problems, being resilient in the face of critique, and innovating continuously. I also carry with me a deep respect for the importance of visuals in communication. Not to mention an unshakable hatred for bad fonts. While I did not end up as a designer, the background has made it so much easier to transition between industries and work in consulting. I am not goign to pretend it gave me all the tools I needed, eventually, I added an MBA to bridge the gaps I had, but I still find myself relying on my design thinking foundation almost daily. My go-to workflow for an efficient design project involves the following: - A big chunk of research - if you’re going straight into sketching ideas, you’ll probably get stuck at some point - Ideation - this can be through prototype models, 3D modelling or my favourite, collages - 3D Modelling - ideally at a point where you’re comfortable with the first iteration of your design - Diagrams, drawings, collages - essentially filler bits that help make your project richer - Curation - this plays a big part in having a flowing narrative throughout your work Did I leave anything out? Every day, I make it a point to learn something new, whether it’s mastering a new tool, exploring the latest in AI, or simply experimenting with fresh design trends. The key? I immediately put what I’ve learned into practice. Why is this so important? Because the design world evolves at lightning speed. If you’re not constantly learning, you risk falling behind.
