I’ve learned, as my internship with Greystar is now complete, that development is rooted in community and there must be a passion for connecting individuals to solutions. My goal was to develop a retroactive development cost yield model that could account for being accretive as interest rates and construction costs fluctuate. While this was my capstone, I learned and had a lot of help from teams in property management, #construction, and asset management with how to utilize capital efficiently to find the highest and best use for land. The diligence the teams take to prioritize investor’s demands while ensuring an opportunity to trade the asset in forecasted years is incredible. I appreciated the opportunity to work alongside my mentors, Jordan Egan , Kurt Hoelscher, Ashley Zubizarreta, Remy Midkiff, Mai Olaussen, and Brian Herwald; discussing what it takes to achieve solutions in this industry. I gained skills in market analysis, financial modeling with and without tax abatements, site and market analysis, contract litigation, quality control, valuation techniques, and observed cross-team leadership. From the first day, the train never stopped moving, and the learning was an inclusive and immersive experience. This opportunity has encouraged me to continue pursuing my career goal of introducing infrastructure-led development to communities in need of attainable mixed-use #housing. #internship #realestate #engineering

It gives us great pleasure to share that Howard University is offering an accredited Course in Commercial Real Estate starting Spring Semester, 2025. The course will cover Commercial Real Estate Development and Financial Underwriting. Project feasibility, due diligence, and entitlements for Multifamily housing, Multifamily with Affordable Housing and Retail, and Data Center projects are key areas to be studied. Dr. Lynne Kelly will lead the course, with support from Lowe and FLGA, the co-Founders of CRE Access. Practical examples and analysis will be provided by real estate experts that are members of CRE-Access. For the past two years, CRE-Access members have provided twenty-eight internships in its ongoing effort to create pathways to close the access gap within the CRE industry to benefit minority scholars. 🌟 Intern Spotlight: Meet Phoebe Ellis! 🌟 We just caught up with Phoebe, one of our talented summer interns working out of our corporate office. Here’s what she shared: 🔹 About Phoebe: "I'm interning with the R&D department at the corporate office. I recently completed my second year at Georgia Tech, majoring in Civil Engineering. I’m also from Atlanta, Georgia." 🔹 Internship Experience at Schnabel: "My internship at Schnabel has been great! Everyone is kind and willing to share their knowledge. I’ve enjoyed visiting job sites, applying classroom knowledge, and working with fellow interns. I’ve been involved in micropile load tests at M&T Bank Stadium, job support for SOMOS and Eccles, and R&D projects like analyzing waterfront tiebacks, concrete maturity, and deflection of a hanging mast. This experience has been eye-opening and shaped my future career goals." 🔹 Most Important Lesson Learned: "The most important lesson I’ve learned so far is that it’s okay to ask questions or ask for help. I’m halfway through college, so I still have a lot to learn. Everyone at Schnabel is a great resource, and I need to take advantage of all the knowledge they have." 🔹 Free Time Fun: "I really enjoy being outside in the sun, whether hiking, running, or sitting in a park reading a book. On July 25th we hosted an event specifically designed to engage summer interns from local industry firms. LCI was excited for their own 2024 summer intern, Ryan Hydrick to participate and got his unique perspective. “This past Thursday, I attended the Lean Coffee and Intern Networking Event at Southland Industries in Dulles, VA. During the event, I worked with a team of three other interns to write instructions for building a tower with different shaped blocks based on a picture. Our task was to create instructions that anyone would be able to follow to build the tower. We deliberated within our groups and our instructions made sense to us. When the instructor took the picture away, we were still able to build our tower correctly. We then switched with another group, and had to rely on their instructions to build the tower. Because this group’s instructions were detailed and organized, our group was able to build the tower correctly, without the picture. However, the group that attempted to build the tower using my group’s instructions struggled. Our directions, while they made sense to us, lacked detail, and missed important information, mainly where certain shapes should be placed in relation to other shapes. The LCI Last Planner System® is a tool that helps establish a predictable workflow, and as writing the instructions for the block tower taught us, being able to illustrate how something should be assembled is crucial for the success of the construction team. Furthermore, the Last Planner System® is not simply a way to increase efficiency or output, but a method crucial for the successful implementation of any project. After the workshop, I talked to several construction and design interns about their educational and career goals, and how they view Lean principals influencing the industry for years to come. While my career goals may not align perfectly with the field of construction, attending this event was insightful, giving me a look into how Lean principals not only benefit the construction industry, but also how Lean principals can be implemented into any profession.” We thank Ryan for his participation in the event and openly sharing his experience! Over a decade ago, TSW formalized an internship program designed to give architecture, landscape architecture, and community planning college students and recent graduates a multidisciplinary work experience to help them transition from college to the workforce. TSW offers paid summer and one-year internships in our Atlanta, Chattanooga, and Tulsa offices, and works with a select number of universities to choose students who are a good fit for the program. UGA graduate Anna Shoji was hired by TSW’s Landscape Architecture Studio following her internship. “I interned at TSW while I was working on my Landscape Architecture thesis. The staff was very open to sharing information and answering questions, and the hands-on experience was valuable as I transitioned from academic to professional life. I would tell any potential or current intern to ask questions and take advantage of as many professional experiences as you can. We are thrilled to share that Denver Architecture Foundation has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. This grant will support the expansion of our youth education program that pairs elementary and middle school teachers with volunteer architects and design professionals. We'll use the grant funds to establish a similar program for high school students in collaboration with the University of Colorado Denver’s College of Architecture and Planning and the AIA Colorado chapter. We'll also create a paid college internship program. Together, these programs will encourage architectural education across different age groups and build a pipeline of more diverse students for architecture and related design disciplines. Meet Anthony, one of Domi's summer interns for Team Marketing! Here's a little bit about him: "Greetings, I am Anthony Patterson II, a graduating senior from Jacksonville, FL. I currently attend Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. My hobbies include listening to music, playing video games, going to theme parks, and beaches, playing basketball, and watching TV/movies. I am also interested in walking trail parks as I never experienced walking on a trail until attending Famu. What excites me about the internship is the ability to work on tasks that can improve our skillset to become more knowledgeable about marketing and work with others to develop innovative ideas and use those ideas in reality.
