Gender equality: a snapshot of today. Hello everyone, today I want to talk to you about a very important topic: gender medicine in oncology in Lombardy. Several considerations become unavoidable after reading the interesting paper: "Sex disparities matter in cancer development and therapy" by Sue Haupt et al. Nat Rev Cancer. 2021 Jun. In recent years, there has been an increasing discussion on the importance of considering the gender of patients in medical practice, especially in oncology. In fact, some forms of cancer can manifest differently depending on gender, and the response to treatments may vary between men and women. What about us? In Lombardy, efforts are being made to promote a more inclusive and effective gender medicine in oncology. Specific committees have been established to delve into this issue and to integrate the gender perspective into guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of tumors. Furthermore, it is crucial to raise awareness among healthcare professionals on this topic so that they can provide personalized and targeted care based on each patient's specific needs. It is also important to promote scientific research on gender medicine in oncology to better understand the differences between genders in the manifestation and progression of cancer and to develop increasingly effective and targeted therapies. In conclusion, gender medicine in oncology is a topic of great relevance and commitment in our region. Supporting and promoting this perspective is essential to ensure increasingly personalized and targeted care for cancer patients. World Population Day was established to highlight the interconnections between society, the environment, and the economy, and to promote equal opportunities for all. The webinar titled "Maybe Me Too: The Vocabulary of Small and Large Daily Discriminations" was organised in collaboration with the Fondazione Libellula to allow our colleagues to explore the various forms of often subtle discrimination. It provided an educational overview of the most common but less easily identifiable forms of discrimination, with a specific focus on gender, clarifying the meaning and origin of terms such as victim blaming, body shaming, benevolent sexism, double standards, mansplaining, invisibility in language, and microaggressions.
