Things I Never Did as an Employee in a Nigerian Company😎 In the spirit of reflection and a good laugh during this Customer Service Week, let’s play a little game of "Never Have I Ever: Nigerian Office Edition"! 🔸 Never took a loan from the company - My financial discipline is so legendary, even Dangote wants to consult me! 🔸 Never stole a dime of company money – Not even the stapler or the company pen. (Okay, maybe just one pen, but that was an honest mistake!) 🔸 Never kissed the boss’s ass for promotion or recognition – Some people take kissing up seriously; I prefer to let my work do the sweet-talking. 🔸 Never hoarded info from my subordinates – What’s the point of hiding the playbook if we’re all on the same team? Sharing is caring, abeg. 🔸 Never felt threatened by an outstanding subordinate– I mean, who needs competition when you’ve already claimed Employee of the Century? 😎 🔸 Never gossiped in the office– Gossip? Ain’t nobody got time for that! I was too busy minding my KPI! 🔸 Never backbit or told lies against someone to curry favor from management– I’d rather do squats than stoop that low! 🔸 Never repaid my employer with evil – If I’m the driver, why would I slash the tires? 🤷♂️ 🔸 Never failed to put in my all – 110% or nothing, I was giving blood, sweat, and spreadsheets! 🔸 Never avoided going above and beyond– Why settle for average when you can be the overachiever they secretly brag about? The fact that she is employed to help, solve problems makes her enjoy her work. 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 - But meal prep? Not so much. Just bring on the traditional dishes and she is in heaven. She said, “it’s no big deal.” 😔 This was my default response for over a decade especially because growing up I was taught to be humble, Not to brag, have humility Work hard, but don’t be proud My parents wouldn’t share or acknowledge my achievements bc doing well was just expected I internalized it as I wasn’t good enough yet and to never self promote. But now I recognize when someone pays a compliment it’s a gift And to say “Thank you! I received that” is the best way to acknowledge it and let your body know I am enough. I am seen. I am recognized. I don’t have to hide or be invisible. I can be recognized, celebrate, and share my achievements and being seen. Two weeks ago, I traveled back to Romania from Luton Airport and encountered an amazing Cafe Nero server who truly made my day. At 3:49 AM, in an airport that was half asleep with people scattered everywhere seeking a nap, she stood out as a beacon of positivity and energy. After binge-watching Suits and imagining myself as the next Harvey Specter, I went to order a Summer Fruits tea (I know, not the most British choice). But this post isn’t about me—it’s about her. She was delightful, lively, and had such a magnetic presence that she could have sold me anything. She asked how I was doing and genuinely engaged in conversation while expertly multitasking to prepare my order. As I went for some sugar, I noticed her treating every customer with the same warmth and enthusiasm. By 4:30 AM, she was still making everyone's morning brighter, one interaction at a time. That, my friends, is commitment and top-notch customer service.
