The Hollywood way is more than three-point lighting and the three-act structure. It's also about the structure of the work itself. This is a Variety article about the differences between limited and recurring series, and why Asia favors the former and Hollywood the latter.

Get ready for Disney+ HOUSE OF THE OWL. A Japanese crime thriller set in the world of politics and power in Japan. (On Hulu in the US.)
David Shin, what a fascinating Variety article about the differences between a Hollywood vs Japanese style production. For anyone who wants to know many of the why's behind how projects are written and made-this article is an insightful breakdown.
Can't wait to dive into this world of politics and power!

Interesting call by Ted Hope to fuse equity-based compensation models into traditional filmmaking infrastructures.
Curious how combining this with emerging E2C (exit to community) methods could spur fresh capital upside potential for a production crew as well as a movie's fanbase.
Perhaps, in turn, providing a closed-system liquidity pool, as an alternate funding stream to support writer/directors' future projects 💥✊🏼💥.

With the Internet We Swap Freedom and Privacy for Recognition - Ondi Timoner 16 August 2024, Interview with Zan Rowe, ABC Take 5
https://lnkd.in/gAjPETaD
Independent film maker Ondi Timoner’s documentary “We Live in Public” records the outcome of a 1999 New York art project “Quiet: we live in public.”
“Quiet” was an immersive installation in which 100 people lived for a month in a New York warehouse. Supplied with the accountments of comfortable living - gourmet meals, sleeping pods, recreation areas, kitchens etc, everything was provided, except privacy.
Using the technology of the day - webcams, video cameras and TV monitors, every action including going to the toilet was recorded, broadcasted to other residents and webcast over the early internet.
The project was developed by Josh Harris, an early internet millionaire, to explore the impact of media and technology on human identity. Initially the project was loved by the residents, but with the ongoing the lack of privacy and continual surveillance the project slowly descended into anarchy and crisis. On the 31 December 1999 the New York Police Department shut it down.
Twenty five years later, “Quiet” is strangely prescient. The look-at-me culture of LinkedIn and other social media has created a straightjacketed society where humour, personal freedom, respect for others and privacy is ignored in exchange for the of the vague hope for recognition and gathering of followers.
Getting off social media and building authentic and difficult human connections is the first step we can all take to recover the humanity we have lost.

US and Canadian colleagues please take a really worthwhile, deserved break to watch this documentary Finding the Money which is now out in your region.
I'm really looking forward to watching it and would recommend economist and former Chief Economist on the U.S. Senate Budget Committee (Democratic staff) Stephanie Kelton's book the Deficit Myth which will introduce you to Modern Monetary Theory which this documentary is about.
MMT explains how we have the means, if we choose, to fund CSOs, climate action, PFAS, poverty, the agricultural and energy transitions, fight wars, deal with pandemics, and more.

I am delighted to report that FINDING THE MONEY from Giant Pictures and Kanopy is out now in theaters and is the #1 Documentary on Apple TV in the U.S. !
An intrepid group of economists is on a mission to instigate a paradigm shift by flipping our understanding of the national debt — and the nature of money — upside down. Go Maren Poitras, Stephanie Kelton and all of the filmmakers!

The job of the film and television industry is to tell Stories. Long before the #Story is proposed, created and told, many people need to be on board.
To accomplish this, the industry has developed two #Storytelling devices - the Hook, and the Log Line. These two tools are used to leverage an idea into a #Story.
So, how do these tools work together to get any Story from just being proposed to actually told?
The Chronicle Cinema original documentary, CONVERSION, is now available for pre-order on AppleTV, and will be released one week from today!

A story by survivors, “CONVERSION” takes us on a personal and cinematic journey as a filmmaker, an ex-Mormon mom, and a famous drag queen unite to overcome the mental and physical impacts of enduring conversion “therapy.”
When filmmaker Zach Meiners discovered that his former conversion “therapist” was still active, he began an endeavor to amplify and empower the voices of survivors, and expose the secretive and often deadly industry.
With interviews from doctors, experts, and the founder of one of the most expansive conversion “therapy” networks in the US, “CONVERSION” is a thought provoking insight into a dangerous underground industry that is constantly rebranding, adapting and growing to this day. Ultimately a film about strength and hope, “CONVERSION” aims to give a voice to survivors of conversion “therapy,” who are often left out of the conversation, and speak to the next generation who may not have a voice, choice or pathway out of the trauma being inflicted on them.

I have sent this podcast to enough friends now that I decided to just go ahead and share it with everyone. It is the best explanation I’ve heard yet that helps answer the all-important question of
“What in tarnation is going on with the film industry?”
As we celebrate Independence Day (both July 4th and the 1996 film of the same name that gave us a good reason to go to the movies once upon a time), I would like to propose we also observe a “Less Dependence” Day in the future because the future of art and good storytelling is looking increasingly independent and a lot less corporate.
Louisiana needs to be less dependent on Hollywood for work. America needs to be less dependent on major studios and huge corporations that care more about shareholders than audiences. The world needs to be less dependent on bean counters and put a much greater emphasis on writers and original content. That is why Congress needs to bolster IRC Section 181 so that private equity will flow into individual projects and not just giant companies that are too scared to make anything but sequels and reboots.
The film industry remains split between blockbusters and avant-garde works, with scant middle ground. The traditional cinema experience created deep audience bonds, but the magic has faded with commercialism and repetitive formulas. Revitalizing the industry requires blending new voices with veteran insights, avoiding talent recycling. Innovators like Lois Patiño and Satyajit Ray prove niche audiences can thrive. Social media democratizes creativity, reducing celebrity allure, and urging us to reclaim authentic, community-driven cinema.
