QueerTech has released their 2024 report: Queering the Tech Ecosystem: Barriers and Opportunities which sheds light on the experiences of 2SLGBTQ+ individuals in the tech industry. This mixed-methods report, three years in the making, is composed of quantitative surveys, qualitative interviews and a complimentary literature review. Specifically, the collaborative report explores: 🌈Queer Experiences in Tech 🌈Acquiring Employment 🌈Workplace Culture Index 🌈Tailored Industry Frameworks and Recommendations 🌈And more! As of 2020, the gaming community consists of more than 3 billion people worldwide, 46% of whom are women, 16% are LGBTIQ+, and 31% of players report having a disability. ⚠️ Despite this diverse community of gamers, their reflection on screen is significantly lacking. In their own words, Peng Femme Jam is "a live music jam session, for peng people, highlighting and nurturing femme talent!" Rebelling against the often male-dominated London jam scene, Peng Femme Jam centres and prioritises women, non-binary and queer musicians. The magic that populates their events at The Shacklewell Arms in east London is something that has to be experienced for yourself. Since its humble origins in 2015 as a Facebook group, Black Girl Gamers has evolved into a dynamic community of over 10,000 Black Women from across the globe. As a catalyst for change, BGG has become a powerful force within the gaming sphere, actively collaborating with brands to affect industry change from within. In honor of Pride Month, I will periodically highlight LGBTQIA+ persons in tech. Today, I would like to highlight Kenji Yoshino, an openly LGBTQIA+ Board Member on Meta’s Oversight Board! In addition to his work with the Oversight Board, Yoshino serves as the Chief Justice Earl Warren Professor of Constitutional Law at New York University School of Law and the Director of the Meltzer Center for Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging. He has won numerous awards for his teaching and scholarship and has published four books, including his most recent book (co-authored with David Glasgow), Say the Right Thing: How to Talk About Identity, Diversity and Justice (Simon & Schuster, 2023).
