Large infrastructure projects are essential for moving our economy forward, from highway and bridge improvements to expanded broadband and safe drinking water. But these efforts are stalled by an outdated permitting system. As part of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Common Grounds initiative, Rep. Scott Peters (D-CA) and Rep. John Curtis (R-UT) joined Evan Jenkins to discuss the urgent need for permitting reform and its vital role in advancing the nation's progress. At Future Proofing New Zealand: The 2050 Infrastructure Forum, Infrastructure Minister Chris Bishop announced bold new rules to let the private sector pitch infrastructure ideas directly to the Government. These “market-led proposals” will follow a streamlined, transparent process through the new National Infrastructure Funding and Financing Ltd (NIFFCo), creating opportunities for innovation and collaboration. “There is no government monopoly on good ideas,” Bishop said, as he cited Auckland's light rail as a lesson in why this change is needed. If federal funding for infrastructure and transportation projects proves less readily accessible in the near future, it will likely become increasingly important to find cost-effective solutions that can be implemented locally without full reliance on federal funding. Thankfully, there are a lot of improvements like sidewalks, bike lanes, crosswalks, and quick-build intersection changes that can have big safety and access improvements for relatively low costs. Progress towards safer streets that serve people doesn't stop here, it just might redirect.

🚧 Infrastructure Week kicks off today! 🚧 Today marks the beginning of Infrastructure Week. The White House is sending senior officials across the country this week to ensure they’ve heard about billions of investment he’s pumping into projects such as roads, clean energy, drinking water and broadband. Let's start by highlighting one of the most fundamental yet often overlooked aspects: our water and sewer infrastructure. 💧 Why Water Matters: Water is essential for life and for the functioning of our communities. However, many cities and towns across the country are grappling with aging water and sewer systems. Decades of underinvestment have left these crucial systems in dire need of repair and modernization. 💡 The Opportunity: The Biden-Harris administration's focus on infrastructure presents an opportunity for more attention towards these challenges nationwide over the coming years. By investing in our water and sewer infrastructure, improve public health, create jobs and ensure the long-term sustainability of our communities. Stay tuned for more updates throughout Infrastructure Week as we talk more sustainable water and sewer solutions. #InfrastructureWeek #WaterInfrastructure #BuildingForTheFuture

Cities are probably going to have to do more with less for a while. Maybe a long while. If there’s a change of mentality, they’ll still be able to find meaningful (and even transformative) projects with the resources they have. If they expect the recent status quo, they’re probably in trouble.

It’s easy to overlook the substantial #infrastructure #investments that have been made in the U.S. over the past few years. These investments will continue to generate #jobopportunities over the next 5-10 years and the fruits of these investments are expected to be realized for generations to come, bringing benefits to #communities nationwide. However, it’s also important to acknowledge that there’s still a long road ahead to bridge the #equity gap of generational disinvestment in low-income communities and lack of access to #equitable infrastructure for disadvantaged communities. In light of these remarkable recent investments, the U.S. Department of Transportation has been commemorating the historic advancements made possible by President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) and its transformative impact on America’s transportation systems. They have recently published a new fact sheet that highlights how BIL-funded projects are revitalizing aging bridges, enhancing road safety, optimizing port efficiency, modernizing airport terminals, and broadening public transit and passenger rail services.
