I would like to highlight some of the daily challenges crane operators and riggers face on our construction sites, in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES). Their daily tasks involve much more than moving materials. They are continuously assessing risk in this complex work environment; trolley lines, high voltage wires, neighboring buildings, tight foot prints, biohazards, drug paraphernalia, and unpredictable foot traffic. Prior to conducting the daily tip test, the following steps happen: - security guard present at all times - clearing test blocks of drug paraphernalia - putting out fires - requesting neighborhood folk to move along - not stepping in human feces - communication with operator and rigger in between sirens I recognize and appreciate the hard work our crane operators and riggers do in the DTES each day, keeping our work sites safe and our projects on track. What’s one of the most hectic and fast paced jobs in the trades? An asphalt plant operator! - The plant operator has the best seat in the house. They’re rarely bored, they’re away from the office, they get to watch big machines and trucks come and go all day, they get unlimited whiffs of asphalt, and they ~mostly~ stay out of the elements. They still have a lot to juggle though! - When the plant is running, they have multiple computer screens and all sorts of buttons to keep up with and all sorts of lights and alarms constantly going off. In addition to this, they have a plant phone, a cell phone, and a CB Radio all going off with people they need to communicate with (and some they wish they didn’t have to) - The operator has to be a good communicator to talk to the crew in the field and address their needs, he has to give clear directions to the trucks, he has to talk to the lab to make sure he’s in spec, and he has to keep his ground guys and loader operator informed on what’s going on and if there’s any issues - When the plant isn’t running, he has to track all maintenance and incoming inventory.
