𝗔 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁, 𝗵𝗼𝘄? At the CircularTech - Digital Product Passport Community forum event last monday, this question fueled discussions about the practical, financial and technical implications of the Digital Product Passport. Here's a few things that were buzzing around in my head on the way back: 👉 'An industry-specific DPP is nonsense' At Cirmar, we were already convinced of this, but it was good to hear several experts and industry representatives acknowledge this. There are simply too many crossovers within companies and products. 👉 'The DPP is NOT traceability' Finding out the exact location of a product, or where it has been, remains relevant. However, it is not the essence of the DPP. Connecting with other systems that are able to trace, like TrackOnline ♻️ developed by Bexter, is far more relevant for DPP solutions. 👉 'Yes, we need regulation, but that's not the full story' Rules and guidelines from the European Union are necessary to create a level playing field and prevent a scattered DPP landscape. However - the underlying goal is for companies to improve the way they design, create and treat products, give consumers the tools to contribute to the circular economy, and create new value. That is more than enough reason to get started. It's good to see the optimism of others that are working hard to make the Digital Product Passport a success. There is still lots to do - not everyone sees the world of opportunities the DPP presents yet. It was a pleasure representing our startup URBNC3 at this year's Climate Hub Davos, which took place in the context of the WEF 2024 Open Forums. We participated in an exhibition organized by our strategic partner Faircustomer.ch and GreenUp Switzerland, which showcased promising upcycling products, such as AMUNEMI bags made from used sofa leather and brands working with innovative materials, such as Ananda, creating modular bags made from pineapple leather. Engaging in conversations at the World Economic Forum not only allowed us to foster the discussion on sustainability but also to critically examine our own concepts. I learned more about transparent supply chains in the fashion industry from Patrick Roth and attended an inspiring panel held by Assi Grunder from New Roots AG, and, most importantly, got to taste their vegan fondue and raclette 🧀 . Three key takeaways that drew my attention: 🎓 Knowledge about materials in fashion is still limited, especially among the international audience. Although leather alternatives with limited plastic content are not yet mature, they represent significant potential and need to be explained more thoroughly. 🍃 Despite a substantial portion of emissions being rooted in consumption, climate protection strongly focuses on renewable energies and energy efficiency. In my view, consumption deserves more attention from politics, investors, and public funding. I am all the more thankful for the possibility to showcase emission-light consumer products at the ClimateHub. 📣 The Climate Hub Davos proved to be a valuable space for fostering innovation, sustainability, and critical reflections on the economy but also the WEF itself. These discussions play a crucial role in fostering public discourse and should gain importance in the future. Just got back from the InventU 3rd Sustainable Home Care and #Beauty Forum in Amsterdam! 🌍 It was an incredible experience where I had the chance to present on challenges, strategies and solutions in sustainable cosmetic product development for SMEs. 💡 Connecting with industry leaders from all over Europe was inspiring, especially seeing everyone so focused on reducing our environmental footprint! 🌱 A big shout-out to Ruth Andrade for moderating such an engaging beauty stream. Here are my key takeaways: ✅ Carbon Capture Utilization (CCU) needs more attention – it has massive potential! ✅ We need to prioritize data management to properly track and show our improvements. ✅ Regulatory changes are pushing us to innovate and adapt faster. We need to create value and not only compliance! ✅ R&D has a key role in driving sustainable transformation, whether you’re a big player or a small one. ✅ Let’s not forget – R&D should tell stories to help people connect with these innovations. Great event, great presentations, great connections, and plenty to look forward to!
