NACADA colleagues, I will be participating in a panel on The New Era of Graduate Advising on Tuesday, May 14th, 2:00PM ET. With Yuan Chen, University of Missouri–St. Louis and Ruby Barnett, University of California-Santa Cruz, we will take a look at where graduate advising has been heading in the last five years and where it may head in the next five. With uneven, reduced, and eliminated institutional support, an uncertain legal environment, and a rapidly evolving academic landscape (putting it mildly), graduate advising needs a opportunity to reset. Our students' expectations have changed. Our students have changed, too! What does it mean for practitioners? Can we solve all the problems in an hour! Probably not, but it will be fun to try. If you are like me, you spend a lot of your time thinking about how to create high impact advising opportunities with minimal resources. You may also spend more time managing expectations and emergencies than engaging in academic advising. Too often, the job becomes about convincing people (administrators, students, faculty) that graduate advising is necessary, rather than advising graduates. This session is only open to NACADA members, but if you cannot make it or just want to chat about graduate advising, reach out to me and we can book a virtual coffee break.
