I just finished a training on equitable policy development with an amazing group of IDD providers in PA. I shared with the group my equitable policy development lens and how to use it, but reminded folks that it is just a 🔨 not a magical wand. Equity work needs to be intentional, thoughtful, and collaborative. People with lived experiences need to not only be invited to the table but given the tools and resources to participate. Equity is a value and must permeate our agencies in order to truly bring to life our missions. Advancing equity in one area lays the foundation for broader systemic change. Just as a rising tide lifts all boats, promoting equity in one domain invariably fosters advocacy for fairness and justice across all sectors. Whether it's championing diversity in the workplace, advocating for inclusive education policies, or fighting for equal access to healthcare, our efforts in one arena invariably spill over into others. By recognizing the interconnectedness of social justice issues, we acknowledge that progress in one area strengthens the collective push for equity everywhere. It's not enough to address inequities piecemeal; we must tackle them holistically, understanding that disparities in one realm often stem from broader systemic injustices. #Equity #Intersectionality #SocialJustice #SystemicChange

Over the past year, efforts to champion #Diversity, #Equity, and #Inclusion (#DEI) have faced increasing opposition, demanding relentless persistence and resilience to drive meaningful change. Resistance has emerged across cultural and social landscapes, particularly in areas where traditional norms and values are deeply rooted. We've encountered pushback from groups who feel threatened by the transformative impact of #DEI, whether it’s the shift in power dynamics, the rise in representation of marginalized communities, or the evolution of social policies. In the corporate realm, the struggle to embed #DEI within organizational culture is evident. Despite growing acknowledgment of #DEI's critical role in business success, resistance often arises from leadership, middle management, or employees who view these initiatives as disruptive or threatening to their status. The challenge is to move beyond performative gestures and ensure #DEI is deeply woven into the fabric of corporate identity. Educational institutions also grapple with integrating #DEI into policies and curricula that reflect the rich diversity of student experiences. Resistance can come from faculty, administration, or external stakeholders opposing changes to traditional practices. This resistance is seen in debates over affirmative action, curriculum reforms, and fostering inclusive campus environments. Legally, the push for #DEI is met with significant challenges, from court rulings that roll back affirmative action to legislative efforts aiming to restrict DEI initiatives. The legal landscape can either bolster or obstruct #DEI progress, making "against the tide" an apt description of the ongoing battle to protect and advance these initiatives. If you’re attending the Workers' Compensation Institute's Annual Conference in Orlando next week, don't miss the panel I'll be moderating titled, "DEI Against the Tide." Sponsored by the Data and Talent Alliance (#DATA), J. Anthony Nelson, Rosa Royo, Ya'Sheaka C. Williams, Stacy Stanley, and me as we delve into the ongoing struggle for DEI, emphasizing the need for continued advocacy, strategic planning, and resilience to push forward despite the obstacles. #insurance #workerscompensation #insuranceindustry #WCI2024 #insuranceprofessionals #DEI #social #corporate #education #legal
