Coupang's offer packages are quite competitive. Here's a $549k offer for a staff software engineer submitted on Levels.fyi. You'll notice it resembles Amazon's compensation structure very closely with some slight differences. The stock vesting schedule is backloaded, with 10% vesting in the first two years and 40% in the latter two. The first two years include heavy sign on bonuses to offset the initial vesting period. There's so much more than just the numbers. For SW ENg. it also comes down to what industry this person is working in, performance capability, what they specialize in and if they have any niche skills. Your regular average joe, as an internal SW ENgineer is at 8 years experience would be base around $150k. Companies like Google and Amazon may pay a lot higher because they can afford it and they're also asking a lot more out of their employees and the job has substantially more risks and expectations of the candidate. Candidates eye's may just see the $549k that you are listing and say "oooooohhhhhh!! 🤩 - but recruiters and compensation professionals are like... 🤦♀️ This offer is an exception and not the rule or the average.
