#webSummit2024 Part 3. Surviving the 60-Second Pitch Pitching is like running a sprint while holding your breath. You get 60 seconds – that’s it. We had to distill our entire startup story into something concise, powerful, and memorable. Spoiler: it’s harder than it looks. Besides the pitch, you’ve got the “40 words” challenge. It's basically a mini intro about your startup that gets recorded on video. You’d think it’s a breeze, right? Wrong. We spent hours perfecting it – sound, lighting, English. It’s all part of WebSummit’s activation steps. The takeaway? Nail your message early. Every second and word counts. The more you practice, the smoother it gets.

If Bobby Pinero hadn't shared the story of how freemium almost killed his startup, I probably never would've known he (or Equals) existed. I got exposed to him and Equals because the story got picked by two publications I'm subscribed to: Lenny's Newsletter, and Every (dot) to. His example demonstrates the importance of Product-Led Storytelling. And that's to not just build a great product. But to give equal footing to telling stories of your struggles (and wins) along the journey, while also articulating your product's unique value. Crafting a compelling tagline is more challenging than you would expect – many startups approach it based on what they think sounds good and come out with a slogan that does not give much information on the company. A tagline should give investors a noticeably clear idea of what your company is doing in just 5-7 words. Can we crack building a deep tech startup's IP strategy in 45 minutes?
