Chronic disease impacts up to 90% of the adult population. Diabetes and metabolic health are the most prevalent impacting the cardiovascular system, increasing in some cancers, increased stroke incidence, etc. Many conditions are more common in diabetics including hypertension, depression and kidney disease. A simple calculation for employers is to multiply the % of known diabetics (note that ~25% are not yet diagnosed or "known") times 4 and that equals the costs for medical care of your entire population (~40%). This does not count the significant productivity impact to your business.
Impacting whole person health, aligning benefits to support members, managing an equitable formulary, contracting for comprehensive, measurable and integrated primary care and targeted dental care will go a long way in supporting employees and families.

In our November update, we take a close look at a topic impacting nearly 10% of all Washington residents: diabetes care.
It's #nationaldiabetesawarenessmonth and we share insight into how we perform as a state in caring for individuals with diabetes in the primary care setting.
With the help of our member organization, Delta Dental of Washington, we share some guidance on oral health for those with diabetes.
And we share some ways to engage with us next year as we work together to improve the health and well-being of all Washington residents.
