I would expect this trend to continue with less and less truly remote workers. While we are still working through 50% of lease expirations in the office sector, this could soften the blow to some degree, but there is still a lot of turmoil on the horizon! High-paying remote job opportunities dropped by 33% in Q1 2024. The BBJ reports, with more companies now requiring higher-salaried workers to be in the office, remote jobs now only make up 9% of high-paying roles, showing a shift toward in-office work. The number of high-paying remote jobs commanding a salary of $100,000 or more dropped 33% across the first quarter of the year compared to the final three months of 2023, with more companies now demanding that workers with higher salaries report to the office. According to data compiled by Ladders Inc., a staffing and recruiting firm for high-paying jobs, remote jobs now make up just 9% of all high-paying jobs. While those remote roles are sinking, there is a silver lining for workers and job candidates: high-paying roles are still rising overall in 2024. They're just more likely to require in-office work. It's just another sign of employers gaining leverage in a softening job market.

It's noteworthy that the correlation between salary and the availability of work-from-home opportunities has become more pronounced in 2023 compared to 2019, indicating a recent trend. -- Remote work options are not common in jobs that have an annual salary of around $30,000, which typically represent the lower 25% of income levels. However, as we move up the salary scale, the proportion of job postings offering a mix of remote and in-person work or fully remote positions gradually increases. In 2023, approximately 10% of jobs paying $60,000, 20% of those paying $100,000, and over 30% of jobs with a salary of around $200,000 provide remote work opportunities.

"Higher pay requires higher commitment, and that includes showing up at the office every day, according to high-paying jobs site Ladders. After looking at more than a half-million jobs posted over the past year, Ladders found remote and hybrid jobs paying at least $250,000 annually plummeted by 95% and 60%, respectively. Only about 4% of these quarter-million-dollar jobs are fully remote, down from 10% a year ago. THE HIGHEST PAYING JOBS RIGHT NOW HAVE TWO THINGS IN COMMON The highest paying jobs right now have two things in common: They are most likely to be in-person and require an advanced degree. That’s the results of new research from Ladders, a career site focused on six-figure jobs. While $100,000 has often been the gold standard for high-paying jobs, inflation has pushed many people to view $200,000 has the new milestone. And remote-work flexibility is in short supply with those roles. While jobs paying $200,000 a year or more shifted more to remote during the height of the pandemic — reaching 36.7% in the third quarter of 2022, that has since slipped back down to just 12.2% of total high-paying jobs. That is roughly in line with the share of remote jobs overall, and is illustrative of the shifting sentiments on the return to office. About 84.4% of $200,000 jobs are in-person as of the end of 2023, according to Ladders. In the relatively more remote work friendly tech industry, those numbers are not much higher — just 14.3% of those jobs are remote, and 81.3% are in person. Health care jobs account for such a large share of jobs that pay $200,000 or more because there aren’t enough professionals available to fill those roles. Considering America’s aging population and increasing need for medical professionals, health care will remain a top high-paying job for decades to come. The dwindling supply of remote work positions haven't stopped potential job seekers, with 51% of people favoring a fully remote job while an additional 46% saying they want to be in a hybrid environment, according to employment agency FlexJobs Corp. Meanwhile, about 63% say having the ability to work remotely is most important to them in a job — a bigger share than those who chose salary, which came in at 61%. Overall, the picture of remote work and return-to-office interests is blurry, at best. The Bureau of Labor Statistics in October 2022 began tracking the number of workers who said they worked from home some or part of the time. That month, 17.9% of workers aged 16 years and older said they were working from home some or all of the time. By October 2023, that number had grown to 19.8%. Two months later, it was 21.9%, although that bump could be partly because of the December holiday season. Those with more education are more likely to end up in remote jobs, according to the BLS. About 38% of employees with a degree higher than a bachelor's degree reported working remotely at least part of the time, compared to 2.4% of employees with less than a high school diploma and 7.2% of workers with high school diplomas and no college degree.  Data from the U.S. Census Bureau found 26% of households reported someone working remotely as of October 2023, the lowest level since the pandemic began and down from a 33% post-pandemic high.
