The US election is attracting more attention as the polling date approaches and the presidential race remains close. This election, as dramatic and theatrical as it has been so far, does not usurp the importance of the economic cycle, central bank policy direction, company fundamentals and key thematic influences on market direction as we look to 2025. Phil Borkin provides a great discussion of this and the US election in his latest short video, link below.

With another highly anticipated election just weeks away, control of the US government hangs in the balance. Given the intense media coverage and sheer sums of money involved, US elections are often eventful and theatrical affairs. And with court cases, multiple assassination attempts and presumptive nominees dropping out of the race, the 2024 election will perhaps go down as one of the most dramatic in living memory. At this point, the outcome is just too close to call. Some of the proposed policies are indeed market relevant, so there is potential for heightened market volatility depending on the different outcomes. That said, we do feel there is a tendency to overstate the importance of elections on sustained market direction, at least relative to other vital markets drivers like the economic cycle, central bank action and interest rates, and thematic influences. There is clearly plenty of noise, but the trick for investors is decerning what matters and what doesn’t. Given how close the race is looking, and therefore how tricky it is for investors to position for different outcomes ahead of time, we are increasingly thinking about issues that may persist irrespective of the outcome, and the poor state of the US fiscal accounts is one of them. US government default is not on the cards, but large and growing borrowing requirements speaks to higher term premia and higher longer-term bond yields, all else being equal. It is a theme we believe could increasingly feature once more clarity on the broader direction for the US and global economy emerges over the coming months.
