Children's rights refer to the fundamental entitlements and protections that should be afforded to all individuals under the age of 18, meant to ensure that they are treated with dignity, respect, and fairness, and that their well-being, development, and safety are prioritized. Children's rights are recognized in various international treaties and declarations, with the most notable being the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), adopted in 1989. The 1992 Constitution of Ghana makes provisions in Article 28 on the role of parliament in making laws protect the right of children. As a child growing up in the Okai Kwei south Municipal area of Accra, I was told stories of my ancestors being enslaved for a few shillings and shipped off to work on plantations abroad; stories of the resistance groups and the brutalities they endured under the rule of the oppressors; stories of how some native leaders usurped power and traded fellow black people for consumables; stories of my ancestors chained in shackles and the sounds of cane strokes at their backs; and stories of my ancestral mothers who were forced to become "baby-makers" for cheap labour on plantations abroad. In Africa, the repercussions of slavery have been woven into the economic, social, and cultural structures of many countries and have manifested in the form of modern slavery. For example, in Ghana, modern slavery persists in a variety of ways, such as forced labour, human trafficking, and the exploitation of children in the fishing, farming, and domestic sectors. With the advent of technology and globalization, new opportunities for exploitation have opened up, making it more difficult than ever to detect and fight modern slavery, despite the continuous efforts of governments, civil societies, businesses, and individuals to tackle the root causes, strengthen legal systems, protect victims, and support economic and social development. As we commemorate the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery, it is imperative that we not only remember the past but also confront the present-day realities of modern slavery. Ultimately, the fight against modern slavery demands a collective commitment to upholding the inherent dignity and rights of every individual, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or socio-economic status. Only through continued action and unity can we commemorate the memories of past victims and create a future free of slavery in all its manifestations. #victimsofslavery #endhumantrafficking #stopchildslavery #equalrightsforall #rightsandfreedomsforall #advocacy #SDGgoal16 #UNyouth #advocacy #internationalhumanrightsinstruments

What are the Rights covered in the African Charter on Human & People's Rights? The vision for an Africa whose development is premised on good governance where there is respect for #humanrights, #justice and the rule of law is founded on The African Charter on Human and People’s Rights, which recognises that development cannot be disassociated from civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights; and all these rights must be present for societies to grow.
