Ophthopedia Update:The Unfolding Story of Private Equity in Ophthalmology: Over the past decade, private equity (PE) has disrupted the classic private practice ownership model in ophthalmology by acquiring and consolidating practices across our specialty. Support for and against the sale of private physician groups to larger, privately held management groups has been hotly debated. As time passes, data are emerging on the impact these sales have had on the productivity, practice patterns, revenue generation, and physician satisfaction of the original physician groups. In this issue, Singh et al1 (see page 150) describe the changes that occurred after PE buyout of 4 retina services: commonly injected anti–vascular endothelial growth factor agents (bevacizumab, aflibercept, and ranibizumab), retina procedures, diagnostic imaging, and evaluation and management visits. #Ophthalmology #ophthotwitter #eyecare

🧠 Medical Microinstruments, Inc. completes preclinical neurosurgery study with Symani Surgical System The study evaluated the feasibility of MMI’s proprietary Symani Surgical System in repairing brain blood vessels in an animal model. MMI said that the study also marks the first instance of robotic-assisted microsurgery being performed in the brain. The preclinical study was conducted by Adnan Siddiqui, CEO and chief medical officer of the Jacobs Institute in Buffalo, New York. We are pleased to announce a new agreement with the PHRI Population Health Research Institute for a clinical study focused on detecting atrial fibrillation after non-cardiac surgery. This 24-month collaboration will utilize our #PocketECG devices and advanced #AI algorithms for #ECG analysis, with initial sites in Canada and Spain, and the potential for expansion into additional countries. 🌍💡 “Collaboration in clinical research execution is a new area of business development for Medicalgorithmics, which we are successfully expanding on a global scale. Particularly promising is the cardiovascular domain in new drug trials, but as you can see, we are also establishing collaborations in other trials with success," says Magdalena Ś., Director of Clinical Affairs and Product Implementation at Medicalgorithmics S.A.. This agreement represents our third initiative to provide cardiac monitoring services in clinical trials, underscoring our ongoing development in this area. To help improve early detection of these problems in Ambergris Caye, Belize, researchers aim to implement new AI-driven screening tools while training local healthcare providers. The principal investigators, Dr. Caroline Fisher, MD and Dr. David Myung, MD, PhD, alongside their research team member Dr. Houri Esmaeilkhanian, MD are given a new hope from the Global Seed Grant. This Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health and Stanford Medicine Department of Ophthalmology funded grant gives the clinic hope in their attempt to significantly decrease preventable blindness due to diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma in the region and hopefully influence similar projects worldwide.
