eVolo Magazine hosts a skyscraper competition each year, encouraging designers to "redefine skyscraper design through the implementation of novel technologies, materials, programs, aesthetics, and spatial organizations; along with studies on globalization, flexibility, adaptability, and the digital revolution." A team of CannonDesigners-- Steffany Brady, Sharon Mathew, Stefania Ingaramo, Aimee Platt, Peter Kuo, Brandon Geiger and Christopher Soria-- came up with The Corallite, a self-sustaining vertical wellness village designed to empower health and wellbeing for a world at sea in the year 4023. The team wrote, "The Corallite creates an economic and social focal point that is rooted in health. The tower is designed to not only cure and care for illness but to empower wellbeing at every turn. The Corallite stands as a physical testament to the resilience of our human race and the innovation that continues to propel our society forward despite the uncertainty of our future." What differentiates a design firm from a traditional AE firm? For me, The process behind this fun competition exemplifies the difference. For starters, no one stopped us or told us, "this is silly." The team behind this sci-fi inspired idea came from all different professional and personal backgrounds. Architecture was the end product, if you will, but design occured across a range disciplines (and I'm definitely not an architect). Technical credentials and seniority were intentionally absent. Instead, each individual brought their unique skills to inform and contribute to a final solution. Design, in this case, was a verb not a noun. That makes all the difference. It's really inspiring (and fun) to work in this way. #livingcentereddesign #cognitivediversity
