LGBTQ+ Elders Face Abuse & Costly Health Disparities Imagine moving into a nursing home and fearing for your safety...beyond what the typical older adult faces. This is the plight of many LGBTQ+ elders, who also often face abuse by home health aides in their very own homes. Steve Gurney of Positive Aging Community shared this post about an upcoming viewing of the groundbreaking, and unfortunately still relevant, film Gen Silent. While I didn't show the whole film, I used the #GenSilent trailer as a vehicle for teaching in my course at Cornell. Students learned about the disproportionate discrimination and abuse faced by #LGBTQ+ elders and the health impacts. While many believe there is a moral imperative to protect these elders, there are also the financial issues because abuse and discrimination lead to worse health outcomes. A Google search provides countless articles on the health disparities. How are the needs of LGBTQ+ elders addressed in your work? Have you seen the groundbreaking documentary Gen Silent? The critically acclaimed documentary about LGBTQ older people going back into the closet to survive an often hostile care system. The film was released in 2011 so my feeling is there is a large group of senior living professionals, LGBT+ advocates who missed the screenings of this important film.
